Message from the Manager
Congratulations to the players and spectators of the Great Horwood Under 9 team who have finished third in the MKDJ7 fair play league. We were in competition against the other 61 teams in the league and should be proud of the fact we upheld the tradition of the club in seeing the game played in the right way in a sporting atmosphere...
Well Done....(Steve)

2005-6 Tournaments
Mursley Tournament - 9 July 2006
A tournament of 'what could of been' for the under 9's started well, then just didn't quite go our way....
All teams competing were of a high quality and the Ravens competed well in all games. The first match against Water Eaton Yellow saw the Ravens dominate most of the game topping it off with a deflected goal from Liam to win 1-0.
The next game saw Aylesbury take the lead only for Callum to rocket in an equaliser from the wing in his usual classic fashion. Followed by Callum's usual goal celebrations...
The game against Waterhall Stars saw an own goal from the opposition draw the game at 1-1. We knew it wasn't to be our day when the next game saw the Ravens dominate all of the game with several near misses only for their striker to burst through and go onto win the game with a good solo effort. The only chance they had all game being enough to seal the points.
The next two games against City Colts Hawks and Water Eaton Blue continued the trend of the Ravens competing but not scoring and both games ended with 1-0 losses after good play from the Ravens and periods of domination only to be foiled by the solitary goal.
The final game was also an end-to-end affair with an unfortunate handball giving a penalty win to Kempston. Great saves from Nick in goal were the highlight of the last game but all-in-all the whole squad had performed well throughout the day but just failed to get the reward their efforts deserved.
This tournament marked the end of our season, our performances show we can we can look forward to a bright future next season as we get back to training on the 31st August.

Burton Youth Tournament - 17th June 2006
On a sun kissed morning and after an early morning start the Ravens performed well throughout the tournament but kept conceding own goals.
The team started well putting in a strong display against the home team Burton Youth to end the game at 0-0. Next up, a game against Great Doddington where the manager had failed to read the rule about all free- kicks being indirect and instructed Toby to go for goal from the half-way line. Toby took a tremendous whack at it and fortunately the goalkeeper attempted to save it, just touching it as it flew past to allow the goal, but it did cause some questions to be raised by the opposition.
After the goal we conceded corners and each time the ball came across nobody took any positive steps to attack the ball. It was just a matter of time before they equalised and sure enough it wasn't long before the ball hit a defender to go in. Not to be downhearted the Ravens went forward again and this time Liam scored to go 2-1 ahead. Unfortunately another corner led to another own goal and the game ended at 2-2.
The next game against Rushden Rangers Green and once again the result was affected by an own goal and not defending a corner. Rushden had one player attacking the corner and we had three defenders and a goalkeeper watching the ball so everyone was a little surprised how the ball squeezed in. There was very little clear goalmouth action in this game as both teams played out a very even match.
For our last game against Kettering Generals Red we needed a win to be sure of going through. We pressed forward at every opportunity and Jacks shot was eventually turned in by Liam. The match finished 1-0 and we progressed through to the quarter-finals.
The quarter final against Vicarage Farm was another one of those games that could have gone either way. We took the lead with a great goal from Callum only to concede two goals from open play and end the game at 2-1.
Much disappointment at the end could only be tempered by the fact all the players had played well throughout the day.. from Nick being acrobatic in goal, Tom and Sam both solid at the back, Dan making space and getting stuck in, Liam starting to show some of his old form, Callum (mr Cool) and his goal celebrations and Jack who is continuing to improve his team game and look for the pass as well as the goal.

Newport Pagnell Tournament - 27 May 2006
This tournament was played in miserable conditions. A bleak weather forecast proved true as the rain started about the time of the first game and never really subsided. The boys battled hard in all matches and we always competitive however a "tough day at the office" in front of ours and the opposition goals proved to be the decisive factors against some good opposition.
Great Horwood Under 9s walkover Finedon Victoria Youth
The opposition obviously knew what the weather forecast was and never turned up.
Great Horwood Under 9s 1 Gregory Celtic 2
Callum Turner scored from just inside the half way line with one of his trade mark free kicks to level the game. Two goals close range strikes either side of Callum's goal proved ultimately decisive.
Great Horwood Under 9s 0 Newport Pagnell Town 1
Newport Pagnell looked the pick of the teams in our group but were made to struggle against us. A goal midway through the game was the only goal but we did have good spells of pressure in and around their goalmouth.
Great Horwood Under 9s 0 Willen Warriors 0
Both teams could have won this but Horwood especially will feel disappointed not to have taken all the points. After a 50 minute gap between matches and in driving rain both teams struggled to get going initially but by the end of the match there was plenty of goal mouth action.
Great Horwood Under 9s 0 New City Saints 2
New City Saints were destined for the semi finals before this match and to be honest it showed. A physical team with their touchline/parents giving the referee plenty of "encouragement" they were a team who really were up for it. No excuses here as they just had a bit more than us in all departments however the settling second goal came with practically the last kick of the game, beforehand Horwood had a succession of chances and corners. The latter of which we must learn to attack and not avoid.

MKDons Tournament 10th May
On a sun kissed evening the MKDons put on a very good tournament which the under 9's greatly enjoyed albeit tinged with a little disappointment.
The format of the tournament involved a series of five games in two separate leagues before the top two in each group qualified for a semi-final and then final. The Ravens started the event playing against a strong Bletchley Colts Youth side. A tight game with lots of nerves on the pitch (and the touchline) the game ended with a 0-0 scoreline. The next game against MK Tigers could have seen at least three goals but the team were not in the mood for passing and failed to use players in the best positions.
Next up were Woburn Lions Whirlwinds and the Ravens finally got on the score sheet with good goals from Callum and Liam. At this stage all players were taking their turn with being sub or coming off after three minutes. The system worked well, never weakening the team and freshening the legs on a warm evening. Another goalless draw against Brookfield Rangers Peregrines led to a slight disagreement about a 66 world cup type goal for Brookfield but fortunately the decision this time was accurate and no goal was given. It would have been cruel as the Ravens deserved better from the game. The last group game was against the leaders City colts Hawks. They had looked strong in their previous games but never threatened the Ravens who could have nicked the result themselves. As it was, a 0-0 draw led to both teams going through to the semi-finals.
After a short break the Ravens took to the field against a very strong Bletchley side but defended well and could have scored. As the time ticked away a corner was awarded and as the Ravens defence were still organising themselves the corner was taken and a shot squeezed in from a tight angle. A crucial lapse in concentration that proved decisive. Just before the end another goal was conceded when all the players stopped (and the manager on the side line) when a whistle sounded. Unfortunately it was for the game taking
place on the next pitch but the momentary lapse in play led to Bletchley scoring another. The Ravens still had time to mount an impressive attack as Liam dribbled past four players before having his shot blocked and then being badly tackled just as the final whistle went. The tackle led to a need for an ice pack but the Ravens could be proud of their performance. We could have progressed further if passes had been made in earlier games and it is something which will be worked on in training, we need to play as team more consistently before we can start to realise our potential.

2005-6 Match Reports
Brackley Athletic 3 Great Horwood 0
Scorers:-
The Ravens looked a bit sluggish after Wednesdays exertions and training on Thursday.
After a delayed start the first half started and within a couple of minutes the Ravens were down after a speculative toe poke from distance whistled in with power into the bottom right hand corner. 1-0 to the home side in what had been an even opening. The Ravens were again playing a slightly different formation which took time to settle. Robin playing in the middle had a good strong game with Tom and Sam being strong at the back. Athletic were pushing a lot of players forward and overloading our defence but on the break we could still have seen at least four goals scored, one in particular from Callum shooting just over the bar.
1-0 at half time more changes were made with Dan coming back on and Toby going in goal. As the half progressed we started to play more football but lacked the bite to tackle back effectively. Although we looked good going forward we always seemed to be under pressure whenever we lost the ball as the home side attacked quickly and in numbers.
After 10 minutes another shot from distance slipped past the keeper to make it 2-0. The Ravens were looking a little jaded at this point so a couple more changes were made to try and push on and achieve at least a goal. Again, we played the better passing game when we had the chance but kept running into blind corners to lose the ball.
The last goal was also a goal from distance as the player ran forward and shot. This time the keeper almost got to it but a good goal to finish the scoring. After the goal the Ravens had several chances to get something from the game but it wasn't to be and the game ended 3-0. Not too downhearted at the end it looked like most of them needed a rest.
Starting line up:- Henry, Sam, Tom, Robin, Liam, Tom, Callum, Daniel.
Leighton Rangers 8 Great Horwood 0
MKDJ7 League (06 May 2006)
An under strength Ravens team came up against an in form Leighton team to record their heaviest loss. The first five minutes were an even affair but for the rest of the game superior team play left the Ravens constantly under pressure resulting in little passing and conceding possession all too easily. Toby and Nick both performed heroics in goal and none of the goals were down to poor goalkeeping or even sloppy goals. The opposition just used the slight edge to their advantage every time.
The Ravens to their credit never gave up and fought to the end. 5-0 at half time had seen a slightly disjointed team formation allowing the opposition lots of space in front of goal. Changes at half time lead to a better shape, we looked more solid and were able to create some decent attacks. However, the passing and movement from last week wasnt there and a poor display of keeping possession always led to pressure from Leighton which either resulted in a goal or at least a corner.
The Ravens need to learn from this match, although Leighton had a couple more years experience and a bit more skill we made it too easy for them by giving them the ball, and giving them a bit too much space. The Leighton corners were another feature of the game as every corner was dangerously dropped into the box requiring a good save to stop the score.
Lots to work on and a decent reminder that we are a good team but still need to improve in certain areas. Next seasons use of the floodlights and more professional training will see us progress.
Starting line up:- Toby, Sam, Robin, Liam, Tom, Callum, Daniel.
Great Horwood 7 Moretonville Wanderers 3
Scorers:- Jack(3), Henry(2), Callum, Liam
The Ravens played some of their best football of the season against a team from Moretonville with strong players.
The first ten minutes were an absolute joy to watch as slick passing and movement continuosly ripped through the visitors to provide chances for Henry to score his first goal and Callum to blast home for a 2-0 lead. A bit of over-confidence then crept in as Moretonville took their turn to start playing with strong runs down their left which eventually led to a fine solo effort and a 2-1 score line at half time. Although the Ravens still competed across the pitch they had lost their edge in passing and movement.
Half time team talk concentrated again on the passing required as two or three players just needed to remember to look up and some others just needed to tighten up a bit. Harsh criticism for what had been a really good first half performance.
As the second half started the opposition again burst forward to cross for a deflected equaliser. A quick readjustment of the team followed and at 2-2 it was all to play for. The next ten minutes were a very even affair, both teams bunching and chasing the ball in a very competitive game. After those ten minutes however the Ravens started to revert to the football they had started the game with and again spread the ball across the pitch to open up play and creat chances. Goals from Jack, Liam, two more from Jack and a final goal from Henry left the scoreline a little harsh on the visitors but a reward for excellent passing and just the right amount of aggression.
Jacks second goal with a combination of one-two passes with Callum and Henrys tackle busting second goal were particular highlights but Sams defending and movement into midfield was also outstanding. Dan showed his improvement continues and Robin was solid in goal and even stronger when he came out on pitch. Special mention to Alex making a debut with an intelligent display of football. Liam did his usual tackling of anything that moved but is adding vision to his game. All in all every player could be proud of their performance, awards for players player, most improved and spectators player will all be keenly contested this year!! As the game came to an end and with almost the last kick of the game the visitors again broke away to burst down their right and cut in to score inside the far post.
In the end another great game following on from last weeks performance. This time some excellent quality against a competitive team made another very enjoyable morning which we look forward to repeating.
Starting line up:- Robin, Sam, Alex, Liam, Callum, Henry, Jack.
Great Horwood 2 Woburn Lions Hurricanes 2
MKDJ7 League (22 April 2006)
Scorers:- Jack (2)
The Ravens achieved a draw again coming from behind to show their competitive streak has not dulled.
The Ravens started really well and with a little more vision in front of goal could have been three up after 10 minutes. However, the visitors were the first to score a good goal and then proceed to take control of the game.
After another five minutes the Ravens fought their way back into the game with Sam at the back being strong, Henry on the right having a good game as a winger and Tom battering the goal from distance every time the ball came near him.
Eventually the Ravens got back on level terms with good play going forward being well rewarded by a goal from Jack. End-to end football followed with Nick in goal making some great saves and the visitors goal being peppered by shots from Tom, Callum and Jack.
As the Ravens pushed forward the Hurricanes lived up to their name rushing forward through the space left by midfield to force a goal after outnumbering the defence of Sam and Tom. A lesson for next time being the midfield need to keep moving and get back as well as support the attack.
As the half drew to a close successive corners from the Ravens were rewarded when Jack managed to squeeze the ball through a crowd of players to sneak in at the far post. 2-2 at half time and time for some changes and refreshments on a hot morning.
The second half saw a very even affair as both teams had chances. The majority of the clearer chances went to the Ravens, but it was Toby in goal who saved the best chance of the game smothering a powerful shot.
As both teams pressed for a winner a goal at the end would have been unfair to both teams but looked likely as both had good chances near the end to grab the win.
In the end a great game, good quality against a friendly team made a very enjoyable morning which we look forward to repeating.
Starting line up:- Nick, Tom, Sam, Daniel, Callum, Toby, Jack
Great Horwood 2 Brook End Colts 3
MKDJ7 League (08 April 2006)
Scorers:- Liam, Tom
The Ravens suffered a defeat thanks to a great goalkeeping performance and some quick thinking attacks by the visitors.
The game started with some end-to-end play with Liam in particular taking the game by the scruff of the neck and tackling anything that moved. A quick readjustment of the pitch after the home team manager had marked it out in error led to a more expansive game for both teams and opened the play for a more enjoyable game.
A quick throw from the visitors when the home team were still looking to get organised resulted in the first goal and a great corner and header from an unmarked striker led to the second. A harsh lesson for the Ravens but one they need to learn quickly for future games.
The rest of the half was again pretty even and played in good spirit with very few fouls committed or awarded. Half time team talk concentrated on being aware of the quick attacks and try to get the passing going a bit more through the team.
The second half saw the home team have most of the first 15 minutes with a great save from distance by the Brook End keeper from a Callum strike and several other saves inside the box. Just when it looked like the home team would sneak a goal the visitors broke through a tackle on their right to cross and score with Nick standing no chance in goal. 3-0 and all good goals, the Ravens were really up against it.
Liam then burst into the penalty area to break through several tackles before forcing the ball home. In a tactical change to force another goal Dan came back on for Robin to push the defence back. As a ball came across the keeper was unable to hold onto it and the ball escaped back towards Tom who had time to shimmy past a couple of defenders before blasting the back of the net.
The event led to a brief discussion about the keeper having the ball kicked from his hands but neither the ref nor any of the home supporters had seen a foul and in all fairness the goal was given to create a hectic last minute before the final whistle.
All in all a good close game if soured a little at the end. The Ravens played well and against a lesser keeper would certainly of got a good win.
Starting line up:- Henry, Tom, Robin, Daniel, Callum, Liam, Jack
Moretonville 3 Great Horwood 3
Friendly (Saturday 1 April 2006)
Scorers:- Jack, Callum, Daniel
In a patchy performance the Ravens took some positives and a few lessons away from an enjoyable game with an exciting finish. An experimental formation used in the first half didn't really work out as the team looked a bit stale but still managed to score from an incredibly tight angle as Jack blasted the ball into the top of the net.
Some changes at half time saw Tom have a go in goal and the back two remain the same as Sam and particularly Toby had grown through the first half to show the Ravens now have at least four strong defenders to choose from. The midfield and attack need a bit of work as we seem to have reverted back to some bad habits. Back to basics will be the theme in the next few weeks as we need to get the passing going again and team work improved. That said, we did miss two of our tacklers today which may have had an impact as sometimes we were looking to bit a bit too greedy.
As the second half started the Ravens were caught out of position allowing the home side to equalise. A feature of the game up until now had been the impressive corners from Moretonville showing good technique which proved crucial when a free kick was awarded just outside the box. The Ravens keeper stood no chance as the ball hit the net and was unlucky again a few minutes later when midfield failed to pick up the attack and another goal was conceded. 3-1 to the home side and the Ravens were on the rack. Further changes to keep the team fresh and more positive were made and the Ravens pushed forward. They were rewarded with a free kick on the edge of the box which our very own Wayne Rooney (Callum) duly despatched in to the top of the net.
3-2 and all to play for with Nick now doing a fine job in goal. The Ravens continued to push looking for the
equaliser, Toby was withdrawn having run his socks off for all the game and Daniel re-entered the fray to try and snatch a goal. As the game came to a close pressure from the Ravens finally paid off with a goal mouth scramble which Daniel poked home for the critical equaliser and his first goal of the season. In the last couple of minutes both sides could have nicked it but a draw was probably the right result in a fixture we look forward to repeating.

The Ravens suffered their first defeat in six games in a tight game decided by a goal that just crept over the line before Tom could clear after a strong challenge on Liam in goal. In a game of very few chances the only other goal mouth action of note was when the Ravens hit the post in the first half and the visitors hit the post in the second.
Both defences were on top throughout the game with little to choose between the sides. The Ravens tried to spread the play more and had some good moves throughout the game. Toby went in goal for the second half and Liam came out to play full back. He kept his position for most of the game and intercepted many attacks. Robin continued to be strong at the back with Nick and Charlie trying to keep wide and attack down the wings. Daniel had a good game before going off injured to be replaced by Callum and Jack and Henry were both very busy in the middle of the pitch but the Ravens just couldn't get the equaliser. Toby stood tall and bravely saved a fiercely taken penalty mid way through the second half.
A tough game for both sides that could have gone either way, the players were not too disappointed at the end and were rightly pleased with their performance.

The Ravens enjoyed a confidence boosting win against the new team from Steeple Claydon. The first half set the trend for the rest of the match as Robin in the Ravens goal didn't touch the ball for 25 minutes. It soon became clear the visitors did not have the same level of experience as the Ravens and so changes were made to the home team to try players in different positions. Toby opened the scoring with a 'bam-bam' effort from the half way line which flew into the top of the net. The game was quite bunched as the opposition followed the ball and we kept them company. Then as we started to play a little more football Callum, Nicholas and Tom all chipped in with goals to end the half at 4-0.
Further changes were made at half time with defenders playing as strikers and strikers as defenders. Robin, normally so solid at the back then contributed with two goals to go with one from Jack and a goal from Charlie. The changes made the game more competitive with the visitors enjoying several attacks but at 8-0 the game was over. The match was an opportunity for some players to improve their positional awareness, with mixed results, and for others to try the position they want to play in and to see areas of their game that need improving for them to get further chances.

MKDJ7 League (25 February 2006)
Scorers:- Jack
The new plan of having a maximum 9 players per game worked well. Henry made his league debut in goal for the first half making some impressive saves but for the majority of the first half he acted as a spectator as the action took place at the other end.
It was a game effected by the slope of the pitch and the strong biting wind. The Ravens set up camp in the opposition half for long periods of the first half, Jack hit the post and several other chances went begging before Jack scored after the home keeper had bravely blocked his first shot. Tom and Sam calmly kept out anything Pitstone could throw at them and managed to keep the impressive numbers 12 and 6 quiet. Other notable moments were Callum's shot from distance which whistled over the bar, still rising. Nicks runs down the right and Toby making an excellent outfield start playing at left midfield.
The second half saw Nick go in goal, Henry come out on pitch, Robin on for Sam and Liam on for Jack. The Ravens then had the elements against them but still managed some excellent attacks, one of note being a passing move between Callum, Toby and Liam that was a joy to watch, unfortunately not quite ending in a goal.
As the half progressed the home team started to enjoy periods of pressure which looked likely to result in a goal. Although the Ravens attacked at every opportunity it was the home team who looked more likely to score; and so it was. At 1-1 the game became quite stretched having the Ravens pushing for a winner but being saved at the back by a great tackle from Robin on an advancing striker and a great clearance from Nick under pressure from a speedy attacker.
As the game drew to a close some loose marking on set plays looked like it could undo the Ravens but they escaped to earn another well deserved draw in what was a fair result. Four draws on the trot for the Ravens, lets look for a win next time....

MKDJ7 League (11 February 2006)
Scorers:- Nick, Liam
Well this game did indeed reduce the number of players in the match day squad as the Ravens had the bare seven required to start the match. In an attempt to give a little rest to some players, three different goalkeepers were used, all performing really well.
The game started with the visitors crowding forward and forcing the play. As the pressure mounted the Ravens broke away for Nick to whip in a great cross which an Olney player managed to deflect into his own goal. 1-0 to the Ravens and then the Ravens really started to play. Although much of the game was cramped the Ravens continued to play football with some neat interchanges and passing moves. Robin and Tom were their usual impressive selves and Callum looked to be coming back to being close to the form he showed before the Christmas break.
Then, just as the Horwood goal had come against the run of play, the visitors had a free kick on the half way line which flashed through a group of players leaving the unsighted Toby to see it too late to keep it out. The ball just creeping in under Toby as he bravely dived to keep it out.
1-1 at half time and a readjustment for the second half as Jack had been a little isolated up front and in need of more support. Liam went in goal and the Ravens went for a more attacking formation. Unfortunately the Ravens repeatedly failed to position themselves correctly for our goal kicks and after three attempts the visitors made the most of their opportunities attacking the Ravens goal and eventually hitting a great shot into the net from an acute angle. 2-1 but the Ravens were still playing some good stuff.
As the half wore on several stoppages, particularly with the scrape on Jacks thigh, led to a slightly disjointed second half but a better game to watch. The ball chasing game of the first half had progressed to a much better game with the Ravens playing the better football. It looked like a game which the Ravens wouldn’t deserve to lose as they continued to press but fail to get the equaliser.
As the game drew to a close the Ravens again attacked with menace, a shot across the goal was saved by the impressive Olney keeper but pushed out to an oncoming Raven. The pass across goal then found Liam to score his first left footed goal and grab a deserved equaliser. The last couple of minutes added for the stoppages did not produce any further chances and the game ended in a fair 2-2 draw.

In a disrupted game on a bitterly cold day, neither team managed to construct a rhythm. The Ravens gave a debut to Henry B and shuffled the team several times to give a lot of players a run out.
Lessons from this game will be taken forward to the League games as we reduce the number of players in the match day squad and rest others on a rota basis.
The game kicked off and it soon became apparent the numbers on the pitch were too great for the pitch size. After 10 minutes adjustments were made and a much improved game of football followed. The Ravens played four different goal keepers in the game and swapped defenders throughout. Nick and Toby were a revelation at the back in the last quarter but otherwise two from three of the usual Sam, Tom and Robin were enough to keep the visitors out. Dan, Charlie, Callum and Jack all played in the midfield at some point and together with Liam forced several attacks throughout the game. Best chances probably fell to Callum but real chances were few and far between mainly due to some stout defending and last gasp tackles from both teams.
No game next week will concentrate the training to focus on a selection for the first match against what is likely to be tough opposition in two weeks time. The team will have to focus now on behaviour and getting used to the changes since Christmas.

Friendly (21 January 2006)
Scorers:- Liam, Toby
The Ravens showed a little bit of rust after a long lay off against a strong squad from Wing. The game started and immediately Wing showed their strengths in attacking and gaining several corners. Several good defensive moves from Liam, Charlie and Toby kept them out until one corner was swept in and expertly put away off of someone's knee. Toby stood no chance in goal. More attacks from the opposition started to be interrupted with the Ravens gradually finding their rhythm and making some great passing moves. Dan on the right making some great passes and was in good positions as Tom was strong in the centre. Sam started marauding down the left and Jack had a great game throughout the match. Changes were made as Dan limped off and Charlie came off for Callum and Robin to add some beef to the team and they really started to play. However, unfortunately against the run of play, a long punt up field just clipped Tom on its way in for the half to end at 2-0 to Wing.
The second half saw changes again with Liam going up front and bursting tackles to score a deserved goal. 2-1 and all to play for. The Ravens stepped up a gear and dominated large parts of the game showing some excellent skills. When Jack hit the post the crowd started to get the feeling it wouldnt be our day but the Ravens continued to press and eventually got their rewards when Toby banged a shot towards goal which was deflected in by a defender.
As the game drew to a close the visitors had a couple of breaks but it looked like only the Ravens were going to win it. Unfortunately time run out for the Ravens and a very enjoyable game played in the right spirit ended with a respectable 2-2 draw.
Starting line up:- Toby, Liam, Charlie, Dan, Tom, Sam, Jack
Great Horwood 3 Preston Gawcott 4
Friendly (3 December 2005)
Scorers:- Callum (2), Nicholas
The Ravens had a terrific game played in good spirit against a very good Preston Gawcott team. The Ravens battled at the start but were slow out of the blocks to go 2-0 behind before they really knew the game had started. Jack had a great half in goal but was unlucky not to get to the goals as the visitors took a deserved lead.
The Ravens then started to play some great football with some marvellous passing moves. Tom and Sam at the back playing out to Nick and Charlie with Callum playing the midfield general for Liam to attack the defence. After a little while the pressure told with Callum scoring the first before a memorable fantastic header from Nick levelled the score. A great header and a great celebration.
The Ravens went on to take a deserved half time lead of 3-2 with a wonder goal from distance from Callum. Daniel was unlucky as his shot just went wide after a late run into the box. His shot just failing to capitalise on a good save by the impressive Preston Gawcott keeper.
As the second half kicked off the visitor’s keeper proved decisive as he kept out the attacks from the Ravens. A couple of quick breaks from the visitors were too much for Robin at the back and Toby in goal to keep out as the game ended 5-3. A tough result but an excellent high quality game.
Our thanks to the visitors, particularly Dave the ref who assisted throughout the morning.
Starting line up:- Jack, Tom, Sam, Nick, Callum, Charlie, Liam; Daniel, Robin, Toby
Great Horwood Ravens 6 Olney Town Kestrels 0
MKDJ7 League (26 November 2005)
Scorers: Tom, Callum, Liam, Nicholas(2), Jack
Another strong performance from Ravens playing in bitingly cold conditions. With Steve refereeing this match Mark took over clipboard duties with team selection and substitutions. The match was played in a good spirit by both clubs.
The game started brightly for Ravens with opportunities falling to Jack and Callum in the early moments however as hard as Ravens tried they struggled to beat the impressive Olney goalkeeper who caught everything. After 10 minutes Ravens finally got their breakthrough when Tom shot hard and low from an attempted clearance. Three substitutions completed by halfway through the first period did nothing to stop the confident Ravens and on about 20 minutes Ravens doubled their advantage. Slick passing and good off the ball movement from Ravens found Callum in space, he then blasted the ball passed the keeper. Throughout the half Sam had very little to do in goal.
The second half saw Ravens dominate playing up the slope but there were some familiar moments of self-destruction as the defence pushed up the pitch too much leaving free Olney forwards. A mixture of home luck and brave goalkeeping by Tom allowed Ravens to keep a clean sheet. At the other end Ravens carved out a lot of chances as shots by Callum, Liam, Charlie, Jack and a brave low header from Nicholas from a corner peppered the visitors goal. Goals did eventually come courtesy of Liam, Nicholas(2) and Jack.
In the middle of the park Robin, Sam, Daniel and Toby also provided defence and distribution in going forward. Toby took the Player of the Week award for his all round display of tackling, "looking-up" passing and discipline.
Next week is a home friendly to Preston & Gawcott.
Starting Line-up: Sam, Daniel, Tom, Liam, Charlie, Callum, Jack; (Liam, Robin, Nicholas)
MK Wanderers 1 Great Horwood 3
Milton Keynes District Junior 7 League (12 November 2005)
Scorers:- Liam, Tom, Callum
The Ravens produced one of their best team performances in a game they always controlled. The home team were a good side with some very good players, the Ravens were strong in all departments and are really starting to play some good football.
Playing up hill in the first half the Ravens opened the scoring with a solo goal with Liam bursting through a couple of tackles to score his first goal of the season.
Unfortunately shortly afterwards Dan had to come off with an injury which kept him out of the rest of the game.
Tom came on into midfield and scored from outside the box, after first slipping and then recovering to slam the ball into the net.
The home team were always looking to break down the wings and it wasn't long before one the breaks paid off as they got the ball across for a striker to put away and leave the score at half time at 2-1.
The second half continued the pattern of the Ravens playing good football with Sam his usual determined self and Robin being strong at the back. Toby wasn't getting much action in goal and came out onto pitch with Liam going between the sticks.
Callum was on top form throughout the game, being strong and looking up to pass, and capped it with a goal flicking it with his back to goal to end the scoring at 3-1. Player of the week Jack had a very good game up front pressuring the defence and making the chances for others.
Starting line up:- Toby, Robin, Sam, Daniel, Callum, Liam, Jack
Great Horwood Ravens U9s 3 vs. Moretonville 5
Friendly (5 November 2005)
Scorers:- Callum(2), Williams
The Ravens put on a fantastic display as they took on an experienced well disciplined team from Moretonville.
Considering the Ravens had three players playing only their second game ever, two players making their footballing debut and half the squad playing up a year the result was very, very impressive.
As the two teams played four quarters of twenty minutes the visitors had a lot of football as the two squads of the Ravens were able to interchange reasonably effectively.
The visitors always led as they scored before the Ravens were able to equalize and then score again before half time. The Ravens fought back in the third quarter to make it 3-2 before Moretonville pulled away to 5-2 before we scored again to make it more respectable and more indicative of the game
Fifteen players trained with the Ravens for fourteen to play. All performed very well and all looks very promising for two squads to compete after Christmas.
Two goals from Man of the Match Callum were scored in Wayne Rooney style bursting the back of the net from almost impossible angles. William marked his debut with an impressive display culminating in a goal. Toby, Robin and Liam all performed admirably in taking turns in goal and overall the intention to give all players a fair and even run was achieved. The squad will definitely benefit from playing such an experienced team and take heart from the narrow defeat.
Squad:- Toby, Robin, Tom, Daniel B, Callum, Liam, Nick, Jack, Joe, Robert, William, Jake, Charlie A, Sam, Daniel C.
Great Horwood Ravens U9s 4 vs. City Colts Kestrels 1
Milton Keynes District Junior 7 League (29 October 2005)
Scorers:- Robin(2), Tom, Nicholas
The Ravens put on a great display of competitive football, chasing down every ball and pressing for anything loose. After an initial attack from the visitors the first half was pretty much controlled by the Ravens. Callum had an excellent debut in goal making some very good saves and the defence of Tom and Robin coped with everything thrown at them.
The midfield of Dan, Liam and Nick pressured the City colts defence into mistakes and Jack looked lively up front.
The first goal came from a powerful kick into the box from Tom which was headed in by Robin. Tom repeated the feat minutes later with a great free kick which the keeper couldn't quite get to. As the half progressed City colts continued to play some good football without creating many clear chances. Some very good corners could have and maybe should have been converted but the Ravens always came away with ball. In contrast the Ravens added to the score from a corner when the ball came out only for Robin to drill it home for his second of the game.
Towards the end of the half another very good goal completed the Ravens scoring when Nick received the ball to turn the defender and finish in the corner. All four goals were very good quality showing the team has scoring strength in depth.
The second half saw a change with Nick putting in a noticeable display in goal protected again by Robin and Player of the Week Tom. As the half progressed the Ravens started to get caught a little up front as they tired and allowed City colts to come back into the game. Eventually the visitors scored a deserved goal and could have had at least one more.
Overall a very good game with a very pleasing display from a side with players who are starting to mature and improve positional sense to go with their undoubted ability.
Starting line up: Callum, Tom, Robin, Nick, Daniel, Liam, Jack; Charlie
Southcott Tawny 4 Great Horwood Ravens U9s 1
Milton Keynes District Junior 7 League (15 October 2005)
Scorer:- Callum
Ravens Under 9s lost 4-1 to a well-organised Southcott team on a bright morning in Leighton Buzzard. The game started at a brisk pace by the opposition as they passed the ball around confidently and, not for the first time this season, the Ravens conceded a goal by being the second team to turn up. A thunderbolt finish by the hosts striker into the top corner gave Tawny a third minute lead.
Shortly after Charlie broke down the middle and a shot that was destined for the top corner was brilliantly saved by the home keeper. For the next ten minutes both teams had 1-on-1s, Callum and Jack efforts for the Ravens were well saved whilst at the other end Nicholas came off his line quickly to clear the danger on both occasions. At the end of the first half a break down the right hand side by Charlie KJ resulted in a hard 15 yard shot, the goalkeeper could only parry it out for Callum to first chip the goalkeeper and then follow up to slot the ball home for an equaliser. Unfortunately as the travelling supporters were still celebrating the hosts stole down the pitch to once again fire into the lead. Half time 2-1.
The second half started slowly for both teams with little goal mouth action for the first 10 minutes. Battling Ravens won a series of corners over a 5 minute spell but could not make them count, Callum got the centres into the danger area but battling defending saw them clear their lines. At the other end Southcott had one corner that was headed clear by Nicholas who was now replaced by Jack in goal. As the second half progressed Robin and Sam were hit by the opposition on counter attacks. With little over five minutes left in the half a good exchange of passes by Southcott saw a brave last gasp attempt to thwart the forwards only for an own goal to be scored. Although it was probably not deserved there had been warning signs of a counter attack. Ravens kept plugging away and a series of midfield passes by Daniel put Horwood down the wing and into promising positions in the opponents half. Just as one such pass resulted in a strong penalty shout turned down the hosts charged up the other end and a 1 on 1 resulted in a fourth goal. At 4-1 the scoreline was harsh but credit must go to the opposition who did not bunch during the game and showed some excellent passing and movement, this I believe was the difference.
Player of the week went to Sam.
Point to work on include positional play, passing and quicker decision making.
Starting line up: Nicholas, Daniel, Sam, Robin, Charlie KJ, Callum, Jack; Liam.
There was a good turnout at training on 08 October 2005 of 13 players including one new face. This was the first training Saturday for a few weeks so, drawing on experiences of recent matches, some thought had been put into the drills. Steve ran drills that involved fitness work, two footed wing play, 2 v 2 game play before going into a match. The enthusiasm was present as always.
Players should remember during training that moves only become skills when they can be done under pressure i.e. during a game!!!
Player of the week went to Liam Hall.
Great Horwood Ravens U9s 5 vs. Milton Keynes City 1
Milton Keynes District Junior 7 League (1 October 2005)
Scorers:- Jack, Scotty(2), Nick, Callum
The Ravens got back to winning ways with an impressive performance against MK city. Right from the whistle the Ravens pushed forward and looked dangerous with Nick and Jack worrying the opposition defenders. With the returning Scotty and Robin pressuring midfield the defenders Dan and Tom dealt with any dangers leaving Toby almost redundant in goal.
Nick almost had the first goal after three minutes when a goalmouth scramble didn't quite go our way. A shot from Robin added to the pressure before Jack opened his account capitalising on a poor clearance to make it 1-0 after 10 minutes. A great left foot shot from Scotty made it 2-0 and Scotty slid in again to push the ball over the line from Jacks shot. 3-0 at half time and some very good football had been played.
The earlier training session seemed to have focused the team and gave them the platform to build their best performance of this new season. Changes at half time with Charlie, Sam and Callum coming on for Tom, Jack and Scotty showed the strength in depth of the squad. Nick continued to hassle the defence and his persistence paid off after 5 minutes when he scored to make it 4-0 and followed it with his usual impressive celebrations.
Daniel swapped positions with Toby to go in goal and allow Toby to have a run at the defence. The Ravens ended their scoring with a goal from Player of the Week Callum. Then as the team became a little greedy in all wanting to push forward MK City's very good number ten grabbed a deserved goal with almost the last kick of the game to end it 5-1.
Starting line up: Toby, Daniel, Tom, Scotty, Robin, Nick, Jack; Charlie, Sam and Callum.

Great Horwood Ravens U9s vs. Deanshanger Colts
Friendly (24 September 2005)
Match 1: Great Horwood 1 Deanshanger Colts 5 (First half 0-4, Second half 1-2)
The Ravens started slowly and paid the price with two early goals. New players making their debut and some unfamiliarity with positions were exposed by a good Deanshanger team with a couple of players who were able to get the ball under control, pass and then get onto a return pass.
Changes in goal and a few tweaks in position settled the side but not before conceding another goal. The team needed to play more as a team rather than have individuals trying to beat everyone.
The second half saw the visitors wear yellow bibs to help identify the teams. Their very dark black and blue kit had been confusing the Ravens. Whether this made the difference or not the Ravens were a changed team after the break with Dan in goal, Robin magnificent at the back, Robert full of enthusiasm and Charlie and Callum running midfield. Jack had some chances up front but eventually Callum slotted in a goal. The second half was all Ravens but Deanshanger still managed a couple of chances and scored both of them.
We need to work on positioning and team play i.e. looking up to pass and making ourselves available to receive a pass.
Team: Robin, Daniel, Robert, Charlie K-J, Callum, Liam, Jack
Match 2: Great Horwood 0 Deanshanger Colts 2 (First half 0-2, Second half 0-0)
In the second match the Ravens also lost to Deanshanger. In the first half Deanshanger started much the stronger being first to tackles, being more organised, and moving the ball about confidently. Although Toby had little to do in goal Tom and Sam were very busy in defence. Two goals from the opposition capped a slow first half for the hosts although just before the whistle Jake and Nicholas had half chances and we did have a succession of corners. Charlie (A) also saw a long range first time effort flash narrowly wide.
Positive player reaction to our team talk saw us play much better in the second half. Tom and Sam were were now picking up players earlier; Toby got down the wings; Charlie (A) showed some nice passing to link up the forwards; Josh was holding his midfield role better and finally Nick and Jake began to link up and with a bit more luck with the bounce of the ball could have opened their accounts. The second period was played mostly in the visitors half but despite the territorial and possession advantage the goalkeeper was only called on once to make a save when he saved, with great alertness, from a Nicholas shot.
We need to work on concentrating and playing football right from the off. We must work on our positional game i.e. where our midfield should be when we attack/defend, our defenders should be marking and not for two of our players to tackle one of theirs.
Team: Toby, Tom, Sam, Josh, Charlie A, Nicholas, Jake
Player of the week - Jake Hodges
Leighton Town Youth 2 Great Horwood Ravens U9s 0
Milton Keynes District Junior 7 League (17 September 2005)
Great Horwood Under 9 Ravens lost to two first half goals in a closely contested first ever league match. Despite missing two regulars and a player to the MK Dons academy Ravens can count themselves unlucky to come away from this game without a goal and a share of the spoils.
If ever there was a time in the match when Ravens were finding their feet it was the first quarter of the match, unfortunately it was this period which saw Leighton score their two goals. Both goals came from breaks down their right and rebounds from Robin, as goalkeeper, saves. The remainder of the first half saw Ravens grow in confidence as Daniel and Tom shored up the defence; Sam added bite into the midfield; Nicholas, Charlie got down the wings and Jack found a little bit more time on the ball up front.
In the second half the match moved from end to end but without causing too much goalmouth action. Liam made a couple of comfortable saves and the defence, which by now included Robin, kept the home team at bay. Up front a Nicholas shot was "kicked" narrowly over the bar by their goalkeeper and a Tom long range free-kick was saved under the knees (ice-hockey goaltender style) on the goal line with a couple of Ravens players in close attendance for a rebound which never came.
In summary a strong showing by the lads after going two down quite early in the match. There was plenty to be proud about in the performance but also some clear areas WE need to work. The we in bold is because some lessons were learnt by the dream team (Steve & Mark). Next week its Deanshanger in a friendly -
beware!!!
Player of the week - Nicholas Bailey
There was a good turnout at training on 13 September 2005 including some fresh young players. Steve implemented some new training moves to further the players development.
Player of the week went to Daniel Bennett.
Great Horwood Football Fun day (4 September 2005)
Unfortunately the under 9 Ravens were unable to secure any opposition for the annual Great Horwood Fun Day, however the 10 available players who did turn up played out a friendly but competitive match of 5 a-side.
Players involved: Daniel, Nicholas, Jack, Liam, Tom, Robin, Callum, Toby, Sam & Josh.
The above players were also treated to a fathers against sons match. Playing into a fierce sun on a blisteringly hot day the fathers soon found themselves down by two goals. The first goal was a result of a terrible goalkeepers clearance which ricochet off the back of Liam's legs for a goal. Worse was to come when Nicholas volleyed a corner into the top corner for a second - the fathers marking was truly shocking. Possibly the fact half of the fathers were still trotting back from the opposition half. At two-nil it was no more Mr Niceguy; now the silky skills occasionally appeared from the ageing and tiring fathers, there were some step-overs, fall-overs, ben-dovers but bags of enthusiasm. As the match wore on an unfortunate own-goal and another goal scored by someone that for the life of me I cannot remember (I am an ageing father) broke down the youthful defence.
