First Team Reports 2008-09

Marsh Gibbon 4 Great Horwood 5

Having narrowly lost to Marsh Gibbon the week before last in the league we were determined that they should not beat us again. All started well when after a short time Adam Dixon scored when a cleared corner fell to him outside their penalty area which he shot into the goal through a crowd of players.

Shortly after they attacked down their right when a half hearted challenge saw a foot block a cross from outside the area, causing the ball to change direction and loop, over Tank then dip sharply under the bar,  and into the goal

It stayed at 1-1 until half time and we went in still confident that we would win. However, soon after the break when two of our players went to clear a cross which neither called for or judged well allowing their second goal to be scored from the ensuing panic.

Within minutes they scored a third, again from another miss judgement, now we looked to have no answer to the problems they were causing us and we were not posing much of a threat to them, at the other end.

After this third goal from Marsh Gibbon it seemed to spur some players to greater efforts and we recovered and started playing balls through their defence for goals to be scored through Neil Walker and Adam Dixon.

When Adam Dixon completed his 'hat trick' and scored again with only 6 or 7 minutes to go we thought we had done enough but it was not to be.

After a tough challenge on Adam Dixon went unpunished, a defender went for a couple of  lunging tackles, ended up on the floor and they got past him to score the equaliser.

With not much time left suddenly the ball broke in their box and only Sam Archer responded quickly enough by putting it into their net for the winner with only a couple of minutes to go.

We were on top for the last few minutes of the game and were relieved to hear the final whistle.

Final score in this thrilling match 4 - 5 to Great Horwood.

Scorers (og)

Horwood new season got off to a poor result with a 2-1 home defeat but there were plenty of positives to be taken from the season opener. Horwood dominated a goalless first home with plenty of procession but just couldn't find the final ball to a the goal their dominance deserved. They were made to pay early in the second half when Brackley fired themselves ahead with only their second attempt at goal. Horwood fought hard for a equaliser with debutante Cronin going close and Medri and Dixon causing a constant menace. But the equaliser wouldn't come and a counter attack resulted in a mix up and left Brackley 2-0 up with 15 mins to go. Again Horwood responded well and started to pressurise the Brackley back line and chances came which resulted in Horwood getting a goal back with 5 mins to go, excellent work through the middle set Dixon free who's cross shot was diverted into the net by a Brackley defender. Horwood pushed for a equaliser but the final whistle beat them and or though it was a home defeat there was plenty to encourage the team towards a successful season.
