GREAT HORWOOD 2 NEWTON LONGVILLE 1

10th October 2009

Team: Alex, Ben O, Robert, Jo-Jo, Lawrence, Tom, Jake, Charlie, Hamish, Joe, Matt

On a beautiful sunny morning, the Ravens really struggled to get into their stride against a solid Yellows team.  It was one of those days where nothing seemed to click for the boys as the ball bounced off shins, passes went astray and we saw only flickering glimpses of the potential of the team.  The key to this was that we all too frequently lost our shape with our left- and right-midfielders all too often drifting too far up front leaving our backline exposed.  This put too much work on to Tom and Lawrence.  Normally, this is not too much of an issue as Tom and Lawrence really are an excellent machine when they are on-song.  This was not one of those days and it highlights our need to work more on possession and positional play.  This is a competitive division and we will need to work much harder as a team and as a coach to ensure we retain our record of success.  Nevertheless, we did win!  It is a sign of a very good team that if we are not on song, we can still do just enough to win.

The first half saw us start OK but it was an even affair.  We held much of the possession but could not get a breakthrough.  Half-way through the half, however, Jake played in a low and hard corner that fell to Charlie who made no mistake by smashing the ball into the back of the net (1-0).  Five minutes later and a lovely run by Charlie saw his cross fall to the head of Jo-Jo who hit the back of the net.  Unfortunately, however, the ref ruled that the ball had gone out before Charlie’s cross.  It is worth pointing out that this was Charlie’s first game back since he was off with a nasty virus so while he found the game tough going, he was still able to show us those brief glimpses of undoubted class.  Just before the end of the half, however, our slack positioning left Robert exposed alone at the back with two Yellows closing in.  He could not clear and from the stolen ball, they hit the back of the net (1-1).

Much was talked about at half time around not losing our focus, playing as a team and for stronger communication.  Joe came on for Matt and Hamish on for Jo-Jo.  We started the second half with much more vigour and the boys began to play it around much better.  Hamish played some neat stuff on the left and Charlie got a number of dangerous crosses.  Jake nearly broke through and Lawrence and Tom, while still not at their peak were putting in a lot of effort to ensure they got more possession.  The breakthrough came half-way through the half with a lovely driving run from Tom which he finished off with a curler into the far corner of the net (2-1).  The game got more tense however as again we left our back line exposed so Tom dropped deeper which, in turn, meant we were less able to attack.  Ben O and Robert, who had been roasted for not clearing in the second half, responded superbly and as a result Robert was a deserved man of the match for his character and intelligence by sparking off a number of attacks down the right flank.  The Yellows continued to attack but they could not get past our defence and a very vocal Alex who commanded his area excellently once more.

This was a well-fought win but shows we cannot take this division for granted.  It also looks like our boys are very tired with the combination of new schools and more school-based sports having an effect.  It is probably good news then that the boys have a weekend off next week as we prepare for three tough games against the other two table-topping teams.  Well done boys.  Take a breather and then we will push on.

GREAT HORWOOD 3 OLD STRATFORD 0

3rd October 2009

Team: Alex, Ben O, Johnny, CJ, Lawrence, Tom, Jake, Louis, Lewis, Ben A

This was an extremely challenging game primarily due to the weather.  With a howling gale blowing along the pitch, all the match was played in virtually one half.  Ravens lost the toss so ended up kicking into the wind first half.  We got into the opposition half a couple of times through Louis and Lawrence on the wings but never really threatened.  Despite the encouragement of the parents and the coach, the boys found it difficult to control the ball and ended up on many occasions just desperately trying to hoof the ball away!  Despite this, Old Startford never really threatened our goal until they scored!  After more play on the far side, the ball was lobbed across goal – we failed to get a head on it and fatally let the ball bounce.  From a scrappy knock-down a shot flew into the net from just outside the area (0-1).

This was always going to be a game of two halves however, and with the wind behind our backs it seemed likely that the stout defensive play (all men behind the ball) in the first half resulting in only a 0-1 defecit would be overhauled.  We did not make it easy however, as the conditions continued to win out with the ball running away from our players now!

The first goal game from a period of sustained pressure resulting in a corner.  Ben Olley strode up from defence (where he had excelled in the first half playing with the usual grace and composure and realising that the best way to pass to one of his team-mates was along the ground), and swept the ball into the back of the net from Jake’s corner (1-1).  We continued to pressure for the rest of the half but the breakthrough was not coming – a few skied shots, the ball just bouncing past the post or just out of reach – raising the blood pressure of the supporting crowd.  Finally, after more pressure, we played some neat football in the centre of the pitch and Lewis, playing really well in the central defensive midfield role played a beautiful pass to Jake who ran on and calmly slotted the ball past the goalie (2-1).  A couple of minutes later, more good play down the right saw Jake play a lovely cross into the middle where Louis was there to pounce and push the ball inside the far post (3-1).  We still had time for Jake to just miss out again before the final whistle blew.

This was a really tough game for the boys in incredibly difficult conditions.  Defensively we looked really sound with Ben Adams showing us all what his true position should be in left defence, Johnny playing very well and Ben Olley excelling and getting the goal which earned him a very deserved man of the match award.  It is difficult to highlight any other players in what turned out to be a fantastic team effort to win given the dire conditions – hopefully next match more benign conditions will allow the boys to play the football we all know they can play.

WILLEN JUNIORS PUMAS 2 GREAT HORWOOD 4

19th September 2009

Team: Alex, Ben O, Johnny, CJ, Lawrence, Tom, Charlie, Jake, Louis, Joe, Jo-Jo

The Ravens did something extraordinary this season, they won their first competitive game!  After a couple of fairly ordinary performances in the pre-season friendlies, the machine kicked back into gear with a good performance which deserved more goals.  This was a tight affair, however, and the Pumas showed that this league will be as much about character as it is about teamplay and skill – all abundant in both teams.  The Ravens started slowly but began to impose themselves on the game.  We had numerous corners and a number of half-chances but nothing clear-cut in the first twenty minutes but equally Alex was not really tested.  The first goal came from a Willen attack which saw Louis showing his defensive capabilities by breaking up the attack on the edge of our area with a great tackle, then digging the ball out past a couple of Willen players.  He looked up to see Jake racing clear at the halfway line – Louis split the defence with a great pass that saw Jake take the ball around the keeper to score with his left foot (0-1).  We got on top completely for the rest of the half with a lovely jinking run from Louis down the left seeing his final shot just going past the far post and then Charlie, fully 35 yards out, unleashing an exocet that the excellent Willen keeper palmed onto the crossbar.  This ball was hit so hard that the rebound fell back outside the penalty area!  Charlie got his reward a couple of minutes later as he swept in from the right to score after a nice flowing move from Lawrence, Tom and Jake (0-2).

We kept the same team for the first few minutes of the half and, having spoken about making more out of our corners, a nicely thought-out move a couple of minutes in eventually saw Charlie with the ball facing away from the goal with two players surrounding him.  He ignored their attentions, swivelled and smashed the ball into the back of the net (0-3).  Joe came on for CJ who had had a very good game linking midfield and attack.  I think we then relaxed a bit and some poor communication around our own box saw us give the ball away cheaply for Willen to score (1-3).  Their tails were up now having not really been in the game until that point and they scored again as we again failed to deal with a routine corner (2-3).  We were now under pressure when there had previously been none and the next few minutes were pretty frantic but the defence shored up and Alex kept his area under control.  Jo-Jo came on for Louis who was now tiring having had a very short pre-season.  This was a terrific start for Louis who is showing all the signs of greater strength and teamplay. We began to re-impose ourselves and created a series of chances for Jake and Joe.  Joe could have had a hattrick with a bit more composure in front of the goal as Jo-Jo, having a terrific debut on the left ran their right-back ragged, and Charlie laid on a series of chances from the wings.  Jake too had a number of opportunities and needs to take the ball closer to the goal to ensure he does not give the keeper too much of a chance to save.  Both Jake and Joe hit the post as Tom and Lawrence started to purr in the engine room and we hit rapidly on the break in front of a stout defence with Johnny and Ben excelling.  However, the breakthrough just would not come and we always feared a Willen counter attack.  Finally, after another terrific Charlie run Joe had the ball laid on a plate to score – he hit the target but only for the defender to appear from nowhere and clear off the line (did it go over?).  Fortunately Charlie was still lurking to tap in the rebound (2-4).

This was a pleasing performance on many levels – our pre-season fitness and team work looks to have paid off, Tom and Lawrence were back on form, Joe added some grit and determination to his game which has made a big difference (the goals will come, Joe), Jake and Charlie both showed skill and composure, Louis and CJ are perfect team players for the spine of the team and Ben, Alex and Johnny coped well after a couple of wobbles.  Man of the match went to the debut boy Jo-Jo who did so much to calm the team from the left by breaking down numerous attacks and instigating much of what was good in the second half.  Well done boys, on to the next game next week.
