GREAT HORWOOD 2 PRESTON GAWCOTT 4

23rd May 2010

The last game of the season saw one of the best team performances of the year. With the sun out and the temperature rising it was agreed to play the game in four quarters so that the boys could have a short break midway through the half to take on water.

The game started quickly with both teams playing good passing football, Will, Robin, Sam and Henry Bu working hard in midfield to support the attacks and get back to help out the defence when needed.

Gawcott scored the first goal of the game when Joe P was penalized for handling the ball 25yrds from goal and the resulting direct free kick was dispatched into the top corner of the Horwood goal giving Tom no chance of making a save. Going a goal down seemed to make Horwood even more determined and within minutes they equalized, a long accurate pass over the Gawcott defence found Ed who delicately lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into an unguarded net. Horwood were now playing the better football, Alex K and Ed linking well and holding the ball up waiting for the midfield to support the play. It was a neat passage of play that saw Horwood take the lead just before the first water break, Ed scoring his second goal of the game but in contrast to the first this was a fiercely struck shot from the edge of the area that hit the top of the net, 2 - 1 to the Ravens.

During the break the boys were asked to continue with the commitment and quality of play that had been evident in the first quarter and with four substitutes Alex W was introduced to the game to give Henry Bu a well earned rest. From the restart Horwood pushed for a third goal, Alex W having a shot saved low to the keepers right and when the keeper fumbled a long drive from Will it was Alex W  that reacted the quickest poking the ball goal bound only to have the effort cleared off the line. Alex JB and Dan B were introduced into midfield and Jack joined the game up front to rest Robin, Sam and Alex K during the second quarter with all three making their marks on the game continuing the passing and work rate that the game had already seen. Gawcott's forwards effectiveness was being restricted by the Horwood's defence, Joe P and Alfie covering the centre and getting in some important interceptions and starting attacks with forward runs, Harry at left back and Daniel C on the right positioning themselves well to deal with any threats down the Gawcott wings. But unfortunately with only a minute to go before half time and against the run of play Gawcott did manage to force an equalizer when a rare missed tackle in midfield wrong footed the Horwood defence allowing the ball to be threaded through to a Gawcott forward who shot low past Tom.

The second half kicked off with instructions to continue with more of the same effort and quality, the midfield line up was changed, Alex W and Henry Bu swapping again. Gawcott started the quickest, reversing the pressure that Horwood had put on them in the first half and within five minutes they took the lead when a pass through the Horwood defence was again slotted coolly past Tom. Gawcott also came close to going further ahead after hitting the bar and dragging a shot just wide of the post. Horwood continued the rolling substitutions in midfield Sam and Robin rejoining in the middle and Alex K replacing Will on the left, Horwood dragged themselves back into the game with chances being created, Jack and Alex going close with long range efforts and a good run by Joe P producing a low cross that Horwood just couldn't force in. With only a few seconds left of the half Horwood won a free kick in the Gawcott half and with instructions for every to get forward, apart from Tom, to try and get the required equalizer, the Gawcott penalty area was packed, Will, having come back on, lifted the ball into the area only for the keeper to collect and deliver quickly to the Gawcott forward who sprinted the length of the pitch to score their fourth.

A good team performance today with everyone worthy of the Man of the Match Trophy, Thanks go to Tom for volunteering to go in goal today and to the parents for their support this season transporting the boys around to training and games and helping out with Teas, nets etc. as needed.

GREAT HORWOOD 0 STEWKLEY 6

16th May 2010

Great Horwood started their penultimate league game against third placed Stewkley looking for that elusive point that would guarantee a place in the same division next season. The opening ten minutes fairly even with Robin and Alex JB working well in the centre of midfield to close down any space that Stewkley might look to exploit. Will on the left and Alex W on the right of midfield were working hard to get around the back of the opposition defense to cross for Jack and Joe B in the penalty area.

Stewkley scored their first goal when a poor clearance from the Horwood left was played across the edge of the penalty area for a Stewkley player to collect and shoot past Ed playing in Goal, a few minutes later Stewkley got their second when the ball was not cleared from a corner to be returned and forced over the goal line. The horwood defense started to lose it's shape with a couple of players in unfamiliar positions so a change was made, Left back Henry Bu coming off, Henry Bo moving across to take over and Joe P joining the game in the centre, This seemed to settle the team, the first half was turning out to be a fairly even contest with neither team managing to create any real chances.

Horwood were forced into a substitution when Robin took a knock on his ankle ruling him out of the rest of the game, he was replaced by Alex K who settled in quickly picking up the pace of the game. With half time only a few minutes away Stewkley extended their lead with a well worked goal, the forward staying onside to finish from close range. Only just time to restart before the whistle blew to end the half.

With instructions to continue with the same effort and improve the communication the teams lined up to start the second half with Henry Bu rejoining the game in the centre of midfield in the place of a tiring Alex JB. The second half started as the first had ended with both teams trying to score the next goal, Horwood to get back in the game and Stewkley to extend their lead and effectively win the game which they did when Daniel C stretching to make another defensive interception only managed to direct the into the path of the Stewkley forward who ran through to finish around Ed., 0-4.

Dan B was introduced up front, with Joe B making way, getting involved almost immediately with a good pass to release Horwood on another attack. The best of Horwood's chances fell to Joe P making  good forward run and shooting low from the edge of the box forcing the Stewkley keeper to make a smart save. Unfortunately Stewkley broke quickly from the resulting kick by their keeper with a long range effort from outside the horwood area finding the back of the net. Horwood continued to try and find a consolation goal but with Stewkley full of confidence they were beginning to pin Horwood in their own half and number six came after Ed made a good save from a Stewkley shot only to see the ball smashed past him from close range.

Joe B returned to game for the last five minutes replacing Jack but Horwood as ran out of steam and the game ended with Stewkley finishing the strongest of the two. This weeks game saw a much better team performance than the previous week against a good Stewkley side that with this result finished second in the division. Will was presented with a well earned man of the match award for his tireless performance in midfield. Roll on next week when the Ravens league position will be decided, lets hope the boys can repeat the performance that saw them 2-5 winners against Gawcott earlier in the season to secure the points they need.

SOUTHSIDE United 3 GREAT HORWOOD 1

9th May 2010

The Ravens traveled to Southside, one place below Horwood in the league, looking three points to secure Division 3 football for next season, the previous match between the teams only a few weeks earlier having resulted in a 4-4 draw and with Southside playing their last league game of the season and needing to finish with a win a tight game was expected.

Horwood started with a reshuffled back four, with both Joe P and Alfie unavailable Sam and Harry were charged with marshalling the center of defense, Tom volunteering to play in goal. From the kick off Southside signaled their intensions and as predicted started quickly pressurizing Horwoods midfield of Will, Robin, Dan B and Henry Bu looking to release their front two at every opportunity, calling on Tom to produce some good saves and the Horwood defense to clear goal bound attacks.

Southside made the pressure count when the ball was won in midfield and slotted through for the Southside forward to latch onto and shoot low passed a helpless Tom for a 1-0 lead. Horwood creating a couple of chances throughout the half, the best of these fell to Joe B, after being put through for a one on one with the keeper he narrowly missed the goal dragging his shot wide.

The half time whistle blew with Horwood 1-0 down, which could and probably should have been more but for some wayward finishing from Southside, The team talk highlighted the importance of keeping the teams shape to close down the gaps that Southside were exploiting and with no substitutions being made the second half kicked off. Within a couple of minutes of the restart Robin, having another impressive game in the middle of midfield, picked up a loose ball halfway inside the opposition half and expertly guided a lobbed shot over the Southside keeper, 1-1, now we were looking for the Ravens to impose themselves on the game and get the result, Alex W and Jack were introduced to the wide right and left positions respectively, Henry Bu and Will making way.

Horwood equalizing only seamed to galvanize Southside who again increased the pressure showing a real will to win, being first to the ball and winning tackle after tackle, Daniel C and Henry Bo in the full back positions being called on to make several last ditched tackles. With 10 minutes to go Southside regained the lead when Horwood failed to make a clean tackle allowing the Southside forward to get a shot in beating Tom down to his right.

Will was reintroduced to the game in the center of midfield replacing Man of the Match Dan B but Horwood were struggling to make any headway with chances being limited to corners and a couple of long range free kicks. Southside extended their lead with only a couple of minutes remaining, a shot from close range being parried by Tom only for the ball to drop at the feet of another Southside player who managed to finish neatly inside the near post. 3-1 at the final whistle leaving Horwood lots to do in their final two games.

A short team talk was followed by a discussion by management and with only a few positives being taken from today's performance compared with recent games the overall mood was disappointment. We were short of some key players for today's game and the position of goal keeper has been causing some headaches, thanks to the boys that have taken on this role, but we do have a squad of 17 and we need all the boys that are available to play the way we know they can. We need a squad that want to play for Great Horwood and importantly each other, the management can only give instructions and guidance on match days it is up to you, the players, to perform and get results.

WATERHALL STARS 7 GREAT HORWOOD 2

6th May 2010

After a win on Sunday the Ravens arrived at Leon School to face second placed Waterhall Stars in good spirits, with Horwood needing 3 points from their last four games the boys were asked to show the same effort and commitment that got the result in the previous game.

The game kicked off and both teams showed their intensions of playing attacking football with Robin and Harry in the center of midfield starting that game as they finished the last with some good tackling and passing to release Alex W and Tom on the wings. However, It was Waterhall that took the lead, after a few over hit passes had run through to Ed in goal they started to get their range with a well weighted pass being picked up by the Waterhall forward who showed good pace to finish smartly in the bottom corner.

Horwood didn't let their heads drop and from the restart applied pressure in the Waterhall half, Jack and Alex K closing down the opposition defense. This pressure paid off when the Waterhall keeper failed to hold onto a headed back pass, Alex W nicked the ball on the edge of the six yard area squaring for Jack to score into an unguarded goal. Horwood were playing well and went looking for a second which came a few minutes later from a corner. With Waterhall failing to clear the ball and Alex W  turned neatly planted the ball in the roof of the net, a well deserved first goal for Horwood.

Unfortunately the lead didn't last long, with Waterside looking to release their pacey front players at every opportunity an equalizer was not long coming in a similar fashion to their first with a ball played through for the forward to control and finish. The half continued with Waterside attacking at pace, Joe P, Alfie, Henry Bo and Henry Bu working hard in defense to cut out the runs, and Horwood countering with some well worked moves. However, before the break Waterside did manage to use their attacks to good effect to score two more goals, both in the same style as the first.

4-2 down at half time but still in the game, instructions were given to control the ball more rather than playing the first time ball and to continue with the same effort and commitment shown in the first half, chances would come. For the start of the second half Alfie was replaced with Harry at the back with Joe B coming on into the middle of midfield alongside Robin and Tom swapped with Ed in goal.

The second kicked off and was played as the first with both teams canceling out the others attacks, Horwood playing some good flowing football. Waterhall got a fifth goal when a Horwood goal kick was returned from midfield with interest, Tom just managing to get both hands on to the shot before it dropped over his head and across the line. Daniel C, right back and Daniel B, left midfield, were introduced with Alex K and Alex W giving way. Henry Bu moved into the middle and Joe B pushed wide right. Horwood restarted and continued to play good football, a well worked move down the left involving Daniel B and Robin setting up a chance for Ed and a looping effort from Jack just dropping the wrong side of the bar. With Horwood pushing forward gaps appeared and Waterhall took advantage of this to score number six, a good solo effort from the Waterhall forward using his pace to cut in from their right and shoot across Tom into the far corner. Waterhall still had time to add a seventh when space was exploited to release the Waterhall forward once again who's shot was again parried by Tom but it still managed to creep across the goal line.

There was just time for Horwood to restart before the Ref blew for the end of the game, The final score flattered Waterhall and doesn't reflect how close the game was, Ed was awarded man of the match for volunteering to start in goal and a good second half performance up front although the whole team deserves praise for a very good performance, Waterhall edging the game using their very fast attack to good effect.

CITY COLTS FALCONS 0 GREAT HORWOOD 2

2nd May 2010

At last the Ravens gained the result their recent form has promised. This match was billed as a must win game and the lads were  put under some pressure to perform. To their credit each and everyone of them put their heart and soul into the game and battled for everything. It was very pleasing to see the Ravens out compete their opposition and impose themselves as so many other teams have done to us this season.

Hopefully this will spark a bright end to the season as we continue our elusive search for a keeper.

All the players played well with Alex W and Tom marauding down the wings and the back four of Henry Bouchier, Joe P, Alfie and Daniel C playing so well that Ed said he was bored in goal.  Robin and Dan B in midfield started the game with Dan playing well until a return of an old injury but only after Joe B had finished well to put the Ravens ahead. Tom then also went off with an injury. Jack was his usual busy self and the two front men worked well together to cause the opposition a lot of problems. Throughout the game crosses were put into the box with a range of players getting on the end including Will and Jack but after joes goal it seemed a second goal would elude us.

1-0 at the break,  all the lads needed to do was just go out and do it all again.

The second half was equally impressive with Harry on for the injured Tom the Ravens continued their strong play in defence and played some lovely football - continuing to knock it wide, particularly for Alex to get down the wing. All great stuff....

The second goal did eventually come but from an unlikely route. Joe P took a quick free kick inside our half to Robin who turned and shot from at least 30yds to find the back of the net for a very direct great goal.

Dan B and Tom were returned to the fray late on for the impressive front duo and as the final whistle went a huge sense of satisfaction was felt by all the players and management team for a job well done..... bring on the next game!!!

GREAT LINFORD 4 GREAT HORWOOD 0

27th April 2010

The Ravens travelled to Great Linford following two close games and having scored 4 goals in both so a positive result today was not out of the question. The instructions before the game were to use the space on the large pitch with Robin and Joe P given the task of marshalling the center midfield looking to use Alex K and Alex W as the outlets in the wide positions. Horwood made a good start, with a couple of half chances being created early on through Alex K and Jack working well together to creating space down the left. Great Linford slowly started get into their stride looking to break quickly with the ball being played over Horwoods back four who were coping well with this tactic, Alfie and Harry in the center covering the forwards runs. Great Linfords tactics did pay dividends after 15 minutes when a well timed run by the Linford forward enabled him to collect a through ball and slot a low shot past Tom, playing in goal. The game restarted with Joe B playing up front being replaced by Ed with instructions from Dave to get involved between Jack up front and the midfield as Horwood were now starting get stretched as the lads tried to find a reply, this left more room in the midfield for Linford to exploit, this they did with another well placed pass that the Linford player collected lobbing the ball over the advancing Tom. As half time neared Alex K cut inside from the left and to shoot forcing the Linford keeper to make a save at his far post one of only a few chances created by Horwood during the half.

At 2-0 down the half time instructions were to close the gap between the defense and midfield to stop Linford playing in the center of the pitch, to control the ball which was bouncing awkwardly off the firm pitch and continue with the effort shown throughout the first half.

The response from the boys was good with Robin having a man of the match performance leading the way working hard to close down the Linford midfield. Horwood were now making the better chances with Ed forcing his way through to have his shot saved by the Linford keeper who was now the busier of the two. The defense had listened to their instructions and were now playing further up the pitch, Henry Bo on the left and Daniel C on the right cutting out the through balls that caused them problems in the first half. Daniel B was introduced on the left when Henry Bo was forced to come off with a strain, this meant a shuffle round with Harry moving to left back, Joe P dropping into the center and Alex K replacing Joe in the middle, the game however continued with Horwood pushing forward, Alex W making some good runs down the right causing the Linford defense more and more problems. Joe B was returned to the action, with Jack making way, immediately getting involved with the Horwood attacks.

With 10 minutes to go it looked as if the second half was going to be scoreless, Linfords chances being limited by some hard work and Horwood not making the most of their chances but it wasn’t to be, Great Linford won a corner which was poorly defended leaving the opposition striker to finish with a well taken shot from the outside of his boot. Horwood continued to press with Joe B making a smart turn with his back to goal to release Alex W on another penetrating run. Great Linford scored their fourth a few minutes before the end with a well taken solo effort, their forward forcing his way through the Horwood defense and slotting home past a helpless Tom. Alex K did come close to a consolation goal just before the final whistle when a well directed lob just floated over the bar but it wasn’t to be Horwoods day in front of goal.

After the match it was praise all round for a good second half performance with the difference between the teams being the scoring chances taken by Great Linford. A few things were highlighted to work on at training on Thursday ready for the game on Sunday when hopefully we can convert some of our chances in front of goal and minimise the oppositions opportunities to score as we did in the second half today.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT HORWOOD 4 SOUTHSIDE 4

25th April 2010

For the second succesive week the Ravens scored four but still failed to walk away with 3 points.

The Ravens started very brightly but saw early chances go past the post or over the bar. Southside then hit the post to just remind us there were two teams playing and thereafter it was a very even end-to-end affair.

Sam had a good shot saved before Alex JB calmly chipped the ball into the net over a crowd of players for 1-0. Joe B was very busy putting some good runs down the left side. Joe P also had a good run from the back before shooting from 20yds out requiring the keeper to make a good save.

Southside were playing well and drew level after a good through ball. Just as the half was closing Robin regained the lead with a cracking shot from 18yds.

Southside felt they were still in the game and it wasnt long before they again equalised with a well taken solo goal when the player was allowed to dribble through 4 defenders before scoring. To make matters worse they then went ahead 3-2 before Joe B scored a nice goal to level it at 3-3.

All very entertaining football at this point and then the luck just run out for the Ravens. Another goal was conceded after a harsh free kick before Sam scored directly from our own free kick at the other end. Unfortunately for Sam the goal was chalked off for encroachment - with a whistle blown too early the ref gave himself no option but to disallow it (and apologise afterwards). It just wasnt to be our day.

The Ravens never gave up and pressed forward. A nice littel through ball from Dan B to Alex K saw Alex hit the ball hard across the goal for a deflection to knock it in just inside the far post for a deserved goal and end the scoring at 4-4.

Overall a little lack lustre perfomance from the Ravens, a bit more competitiveness is required to win these games but with 8 goals in two games there are still many positives to take from todays game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

CRANFIELD COLTS 5 GREAT HORWOOD 4

18th April 2010

The Ravens played some excellent football today but were undone repeatedly by balls into the box sometimes from corners but particularly by a rory Delap style long throw that we failed to cope with all game.

Two early goals from Jack and Will should have been enough for the Ravens to assert some authority on the game but the home team kept on coming back to take the lead 3-2. Jack equalised with a great goal - just over the half way line. 3-3 at the break and what a game...

The second half wasnt quite so volatile but the home side were still able to put the Ravens under pressure from the long ball into the box.

Edward then scored to take the lead after puting pressure on the defence but the lead never looked like lasting as succesive balls caused havoc in our 6 yard box.

A well taken corner was poorly defended at the back post and nodded in for Cranfield to equalise and then as expected the home team scored the winner from the main threat of the long throw in for 5-4.

Well at least we know what we will be practising in training this week..... heading and defending corners/long throws...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT HORWOOD 1 WATERHALL STARS 4

1st April 2010

The Ravens bounced back from their last game with a much improved team performance. All players played very well with the Ravens being the better team, particularly in the first half.

The opposition are currently 2nd in the Division and in the semi finals of the cup so we knew we were in for a tough game. At the start the weather was good and the Ravens were even better. All through the game they played some excellent pass and move football. The first example saw Alex K chip the defender for Jack to run on and shoot, only for the keeper to save. The visitors game plan was slightly different, breaking forward and spending little time in getting the ball to their strikers.

The more direct game in the long grass was them open the scoring with a well taken goal but unlike recent games the Ravens responded by playing even better. Confidence was on show as they knocked the ball around and finally received their rewards when Jack finished well after some neat passing.

1-1 and the Ravens were on top. Jack had another shot requiring a save but as the half wore on the heavens opened and the rain, together with a bitterly cold wind made it really difficult for both teams and supporters.

A quick turnaround at half time to stop the players freezing up saw a resumption of the good Horwood play but it was Waterhall who took the lead again when they stormed back after a goal kick to grab their second.

At this point the wind and rain was starting to take its toll and the quality of football from the Ravens was dropping off as the visitors stuck to their more direct game which suited the conditions.

A quick break from Waterhall saw them increase their lead after injury to Alfie, and a late goal (when to be honest most people were sodden, frozen and just wanting to get home) saw the end of the scoring.

Overall, although we didn’t get any points there are many positives to take from the game. On our home ground we look more balanced.  With Robin having his best game on pitch for a long time and Man of the Match Tom mirroring the effort from Alex W on the other wing we are starting to build a good structure. Joe, Alfie, Henry and Cookie at the back are looking strong with Joe taking his chances to burst forward when appropriate. Up front we have options in Jack, Alex K and Joe B and midfield has options with Dan B, Sam, Will and Henry B (who can also play defence). Ed in goal or up front adds a bit of strength and of course we have Harry and Alex JB  to hopefully return from injury.

All players need to be able to play at least two positions and it looks like we are approaching this ideal.

Come on the Ravens!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

NETHERFIELD SAINTS 7 GREAT HORWOOD 0

28th March 2010

The Ravens need to learn from this experience and look to play to their strengths instead of the opposition. When confidence is high the Ravens can play anyone as we have seen already this season but when they are playing against a big team on a small pitch with a lenient referee that fragile confidence soon disappears.

Work is ahead for the coaching team to remind the lads of their abilities and the need to just play the game. This performance saw too many errors – such as simple throw ins directly to opposition players - coupled with too many players not performing to their minimum standard.

Confidence is all and comes from consistent performances, something we have not enjoyed for some time but is being actively sought – to get some stability in the side so we can move forward.

Goals in this game came from simple errors or simple moves which should be easily cut out. Nothing is beyond fixing but the lads need another performance such as the one they produced in the game vs Stewkley to pick themselves up.

Special mention today for Robin’s display in goal prior to going off with his shin bearing witness to his efforts. Henry Burke for his strong game (and war wounds to match) and a captains performance from Henry Bouchier who had to take a turn in goal after Robins departure and performed heroics diving at players feet.

Roll on the next game as we look to build individual performance and confidence towards the end of the season....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT HORWOOD 1 GREAT LINFORD 6

21st March 2010

The Ravens first half performance was very good with the team performing back at the level expected from them. Unfortunately the many changes made at half time - some enforced and some not, really had a bad effect on the flow of the game and a poor ten minute spell in the second half saw a few goals conceded which effectively ended the game.

There were however, still many postives in the game. Alex W performance on the wing was especially encouraging and all of the five players who played during the game in defence all played very well.

The first half saw a very even game with probably the best chances going to the Ravens. However it was the visitors who took the lead after 15 minutes to go ahead 1-0.

A good free kick from Sam, a shot from Jack and some good passing inside from Dan B was all good stuff from the Ravens as they continued to build chances. Shooting was much more in evidence this week with Sam and Alex both getting good shots on target and all looked promising for a tight second half. And then came the changes....

The lessons from this game have been learnt and our remaining games will see a keeper in goal for the whole game. Volunteers have stepped forward for the role which is very much appreciated. We will also ensure the remaining games see less disruption as we will enforce a limit to the number of players taken to each game ensuring any enforced rests are spread across the squad.

We can still look forward to our remaining 10 games as we have certainly learnt a lot so far regarding players best positions and formation. A little stability is what is required now to build on the perfomances so we can get the results and move forward....

The response in training was very positive and so we look forward to the next game and put this second half behind us......

NEW CITY SAINTS 3 GREAT HORWOOD 1

14th March 2010

The Ravens were a little off the pace today after last weeks good perfomance. We were missing some players but overall the lads didnt compete enough for the ball in key areas.

It took a while in the second half for the lads to start  putting together some good play and at 1-0 down they were certainly in with a chance. The small pitch had an effect on the players as the game was a lot tighter. The best chance came from a good corner by Jack followed by a great header from Robin.

Unfortunately shortly afterwards the home team increased their lead with a goal poked over the line. Ed then went up the other end to claw the deficit back to just a single goal and the Ravens were in the ascendency.

Football being what it is the Ravens then had a bit of tough luck as a disputed goal was allowed to stand and the game petered out for a harsh score line.

The lads need to compete a little bit stronger in some areas to ensure they can play the quality of football we know they are capable of.

I am sure they will bounce back next week .... Come on the Ravens....

STEWKLEY 2 GREAT HORWOOD 1

7th March 2010

The Ravens played a hard physical game today but were unfortunate to come away without any points to show for their efforts.

the game started with the home team playing some good football and they went ahead after 10 minutes with a good finish. This woke the Ravens up a little and they started to compete across the pitch. As the game went on the Ravens started to create chances with one of the moves ending with a cross finding Dan B to cut in at the far post and slot home the equaliser.

Confidence grew in the team with the goal and the remainder of the half saw some end-to-end play with Robin putting in a Man of the Match performance in goal to keep out Stewkley ably assisted by the back four. Joe P was also in outstanding form tackling well and bringing the ball out of defence when required to mount attacks..

1-1 at the break and a little chat to just stop the flicks and concentrate on playing the simple ball. Robin agreed to continue in goal which eased disruption to the formation and the Ravens duly set about playing the second half in the same manner as the first.

The game was decided with just one error when a goal kick went straight to the home side with horwood players not marking. The ball was swiftly returned and ended up in the net for 2-1. Try as they might the mighty Ravens could not get the equaliser their efforts deserved and the game ended with the narrowest of defeats.

All the players did their bit today with each one improving on recent performances. We need to keep this momentum going into the remainder of the season and continue to work hard in training to improve specific areas. It all looks positive for the Ravens .....

GREAT HORWOOD 1 CITY COLTS FALCONS 2

14th February 2010

The cruel game of football came to Horwood today with the Ravens playing probably their best football of the season with some great passing moves.

The game started with the Ravens playing some good football through the middle but the moves all ended with a couple of early offside decisions. Just as we were settling into the game the visitors went up the other end to win a corner. They took a quick short corner and then had far too much time to think about a shot which hey duly sent from distance into the top right corner. With their first attack and shot City Colts were now 1-0 up.

The Ravens responded very well and spent the next 30 minutes of the half cutting through the midfield and taking shots. Joe P had a good run then Tom broke down the left before seeing his shot hit the post. Will then broke through to fire another good strike towards goal but the ball just didnt want to go in. This was confirmed a short while later when Alex had a good run followed by Alex K hitting a fantastic shot which unfortunately hit the under side of the bar and then the post before rolling along the line and out.

Half time saw a change in keeper which did cause some disruption to the shape of the team and although they still played very well in the second half it wasnt to the same very high standard as the first - a lesson for the management in future games.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the first although this time the visitors had two shots and only one went in, skidding off of the slippery surface.

At 2-0 it was difficult to see what the lads had done wrong, it was just turning out to be one of those games.

The Ravens attacked again and this time found the net with a good run and shot from Joe. Try as they might they just couldnt get the equaliser or winner.

Celebrations at the end for the visitors were well deserved as they had held out for nearly all the game. For the Ravens, if they play the same football for the rest of the season they will do very well.

GREAT HORWOOD 1 NETHERFIELD SAINTS 5

7th February 2010

The long break since our last game really showed as a very rusty performance from the Ravens saw the physically stronger visitors ease their way to victory and end the Ravens unbeaten run.

Although the team performed a lot better in the second half it was the first period where the game was lost. Early passages of play showed the strength of Netheffield as an early goal settled them into the game. More chances followed as the Ravens gradually worked their way into the game before Alex K scored a lovely goal going around the keeper to level the score.

This should have seen the Ravens roll their sleeves up and start working and whilst they did show good determination in patches it was the visitors who effectively killed the game with a poorly defended free kick and then a toe poke from a corner for two late goals just before the break.

The second period was an improvement as the lads competed more across the pitch but they still struggled to build any pressure and chances were few and far between. A more even period still saw the visitors score twice for a harsh scoreline but deserved victory.

The Ravens will hopefully have learnt a lesson from this game and will be back on song next week with a fully fit squad. Minor errors were costly today but they are all areas which can be resolved quickly.....

PRESTON GAWCOTT 2 GREAT HORWOOD 5

29th November 2009

The Ravens unbeaten run goes from strength to srength. Terrible conditions again were suffered by both teams on a pitch which really took a hammering.

The Ravens are slowly returning to form and undoing all the experience from last season, we are still making some mistakes, but they can be worked on , as the team gels into a formidable unit.

The game was a very even affair with end-to-end football played. Alex K scored the first of his hat trick after a neat interchange with Jack and Alex JB. Unfortunately we didnt keep the lead for long as a long free kick saw a very wet and slippery ball squirm through the wall and the keeper for Gawcott to equalise right on the stroke of half time.

The second half saw the Ravens have the conditions in their favour and they took the lead again with Jack scoring from a corner. Edwards strength was the key up front as he burst through and laid the ball off to Alex K to score his second and the Ravens third.

As the half progressed the Ravens confidence grew and pressure built on the home team. Edward again burst in the box and would have scored but for a well timed tackle and then the birthday boy gained his reward when chasing down a through ball to slide in and chip over the keeper.

A little over confidence then crept into the Ravens game (something to be worked on ) as we needlessly pressed forward and they lost their shape.

After one such example the home team broke down into the open space and defence were unable to cope with the numbers pressing forward. At 4-2 it could have been game on, but the Ravens regrouped and worked their football up the pitch for Alex K to score his hat trick.

Man of the Match was very difficult to decide. All the players had played well, across the back four with Harry, Cookie, Robin and Henry Bo being very solid. Alex W and JB had been strong in midfield, Dan although injured had added to the pressure on the home team and Jack had run his socks off as usual. Edward had been a revelation up front and a definite boost to the team performance and Alex K of course had not only been captain for the day but also scored a hat trick.

Having said all that the most assured performance came from Joe at the back who played the ball when he should have, tackled strongly, and communicated with his team mates to deservedly win the award.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT HORWOOD 3 CRANFIELD COLTS 2

22nd November 2009

The Ravens continued their unbeaten run with a great performance in difficult conditions.

The first half saw some very good football from the Ravens as they start to recover their form and confidence from last season. Alex K worked his socks off running after every ball and pressurising defenders. A couple of very strong runs in the opening minutes kickstarting his game very nicely.

Man of the match Daniel C had a great game throughout as right back with the new combination of Joe and Harry in the centre being very strong and assured. Joe had to make a last gasp tackle to stop the visitors opening the scoring before Henry Bo at left back had a storming run down the left completed with a superb finish to put the Ravens ahead.

A couple of breaks from Cranfield required Toby to be quick and alert before Tom scored his first and the Ravens second. Alex K continued to impress with another good run from a throw. The Ravens were applying the pressure with several corners making the most of the strong wind. Tom knocked a great ball in to cause havoc in the defence and then scored his second after some neat football.

Will had a good shot towards the end of the half as the teams went into the break feeling the cold and wet but with the Ravens in confident mood.

The visitors knew they could take advantage of the conditions in the second period and so it proved. Several attacks threatened before they scored with a free shot on the edge of the box. The second was a sloppy goal to concede but after that the Ravens perked up and started to apply their own pressure again. Jack went close and several chances went begging as the game became more and more end-to-end. Will had a couple of strong shots go close.

With all players suffering from the cold the final whistle came as a relief in more ways than one. A tight affair could have gone either way but in better conditions, and belief returning, the Ravens would be unstoppable.

GREAT HORWOOD 1 PRESTON GAWCOTT TIGERS 0

1st November 2009

The Ravens finally secured their first win of the season in a very scrappy game ruined by the awful conditions.

To be fair to the opposition the game could have gone either way but the Ravens just edged it after making the most of the conditions in the first half by applying pressure but failing to shoot on sight.

Without a goal at the break a brief time was spent trying to dry out and warm up before the second half saw a reversal of the pressure.

Both defences played very well throughout with the Ravens allowing the opposition few clear chances. Tom had a debut on goal and Ed had a stormer out on pitch.

As the Ravens put the ball in the penalty area a handball was seen and Jack stepped up to crack home the resulting penalty for 1-0.

Preston Gawcott pressed for an equaliser but to the Ravens relief the final whistle blew and we could celebrate the best result for a while.

All the players were awarded Player of the Week as we look to build on the result over the next few weeks. They all deserve praise for playing in what was quite simply the worst weather for years....... come on the mighty Ravens!!!

GREAT HORWOOD 3 NEW CITY SAINTS 3

25th October 2009

The Ravens just failed to hold on for their first win but still played very well, building on last weeks performance.

The game started brightly for the Ravens as they played some good football with Joe going on a strong run ending with a shot just over the bar. Will had another shot just whistle past the post before Jack opened the scoring after being put through by Robin.

It was all one-way traffic at this point as the Ravens took advantage of the strong wind. Will continued his good form with an attacking run and cross for Alex JB to score his first and the Ravens second.

Discipline in formation just started to wain as the team started to push forward to keep the score rate going and this allowed the visitors to get back into the game.

Robin increased the lead from a corner and the Ravens went into the break three goals in the lead.

The second half saw the Ravens defend well for most of the period but make some simple mistakes allowing pressure to build.

An early goal set the scene which gave a boost to the visitors, conceded after a series of play which highlighted the discipline needed in the team.

The second was a little unlucky as a goalmouth scramble ended with the ball poked into the net. As the game drew to a close the lads just couldnt hold on as a poor ball was knocked inside straight to the attackers who pressed on to equalise.

Right at the end New City could have grabbed the winner but a draw was probably a fair result.

Although its the best result for a while it felt like a loss after being ahead for so long. We must get rid of the simple errors but much progress is being made as confidence returns.

GREAT HORWOOD 2 OLNEY TOWN COLTS 4

18th October 2009

The first league game saw the under 13's perform as two completely different teams.  The first half was notable for the poor positional play from many of the team coupled with some poor distribution which consistently put the ball close to the main player from Olney who was then able to dictate play.

An early goal from distance was added to, with the opposition being hungrier for the ball. Another run through the middle gave them their third before some very good football ended with a goal to go in at the break 4-0 down.

The lads are all good players but they need to maintain shape and get used to the big pitch we are playing on this year. Changes at half time and further instruction to maintain position saw a big improvement in the second half restricting Olney to very few chances.

Robin got his first goal of the season  from a Sam corner before a great goal was scored by Toby.  He used his strength to win the ball in the area, then nutmeg the defender and finally chip the keeper for a second half 2-0 scorline.

Discipline is the key for the under 11's - being able to see the game and how their efforts contribute to the teams performance and result.  The second half shows they are more than capable of doing it....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT HORWOOD 2 CRANFIELD COLTS 4

4th October 2009

The first game of the 'real' season for the under 13's saw a patchy performance with excellent play at times with some indifferent form in between.

The game started with the visitors playing some good football with the Ravens creating their first chance with a shot from Dan.  Joe P, playing up front had a good run forward but was unable to get any power in the shot under pressure from the defender.

A soft goal opened the scoring as a kick was returned with interest, allowing Cranfield to grow in confidence. At 1-0 down the Ravens pushed forward and earned a free kick which was expertly dispatched by Jack into the top right corner to level the scores.

Another good run from Joe P went close  but as the half progressed the Ravens staretd to play very narrow. A few loose balls were picked on by the visitors before they slotted a nice ball through the middle. The good pass was run onto and ended with a shot nestled just inside the post for Cranfield to restore their lead.

2-1 at the break. Half time team talk just requested to play wider and concnetrate on one or two danger players at corners.

As the second half commenced the squad were left a bit flat footed and conceded an early penalty for Cranfield to increase their lead to have a 2 goal buffer.

That was it for the visitors, the remander of the half saw the Ravens build up the pressure on the Cranfield goal and create several chances to score before Jack netted. At this stage it looked like there would be only one winner as the Ravens had all the pressure and were dominating play.

Several players had chances - Will could have scored, Toby burst through only to hit the shot just wide, Jack had a fantastic cross met by a brilliant header from Henry Bu fly just over the bar,  but it just wasnt to be.

Just as the clock was running out Cranfield broke away and scored a great goal after a missed header - the ball landing up in the top right  hand corner for a rather generous 4-2 scoreline.

Dissapoinitng for the Ravens as they continue to search for that elusive win to get them back on track but its definately coming and hopefully will be here very soon over the next few weeks...

Today was an enjoyable game as we look to build on the positives for the rest of the year.

GREAT HORWOOD 2 PITSTONE & IVINGHOE 6

27th September 2009

This game marked the end of the experimnental line ups to check on new players best positions and how the squad reacts to the new formation. Overall it was a very promising performance as the Ravens twice took the lead only for the visitors to draw level on each occassion. The first half confirmed we have 6 players to choose from to make up a strong back line. It also confirmed the holding midfielder role is working and can be filled by at least two players. The management now also have a clear plan for who will play midfield and up front - so all-in-all an excellent days work.

Jack opened the scoring before Will had a good run to create another chance. At the back the defence were holding a good line and Man of the Match Henry Bo was tackling anything that moved. A lost ball on the edge of the box was pounced on for the equaliser before Jack restored the lead running onto a through ball for 2-1.

A little lack of concentration saw a goal kick delivered straight back for the visitors to again peg back the Ravens to go in 2-2 at the break.

As it was our last friendly the management took the opportunity to change the whole of the midfield and give a debut to another player - the second debut of the game.

It was always going to be tough but it was worth doing to confirm a few ideas for the games to come. Unfortunately it did mean too many changes too quickly and as the team looked to settle, the opposition took full advantage scoring three quick goals, the last being a penalty.

Further changes settled the side again but the opposition were still able to score a final goal from a throw-in.

Jack had another shot for his hat trick, which would have been deserved for his effort, but it wasnt to be. At the end of the second half there was a momentary feeling of dissapointment but in truth it was only due to a 15 minute spell when the management decided to try the last changes - it was no fault of the players and they should all feel proud of their efforts today in a very good performance.

A cup match is on for next week as the season for the under 13's gets underway in earnest. We can now all look forward to a positive season and enjoy the considerable number of games ahead - 22 league games, plus cup games....

GREAT HORWOOD 1 DEANSHANGER 6

20th September 2009

The Ravens played very well today in probably their best performance so far. The score line doesn't reflect the effort put in and the growing understanding from the players of what is required from them.

Two goals in the first and last minutes of the first half were all that seperated the two teams at the break. In between these goals the Ravens had defended superbly with the backline getting the offisde trap just right on several occasions and making several adventures into the visitors penalty area without really causing the keeper too many problems.

The second half saw Joe P introduced to the fray and he made an immediate impact running up the wing with an excellent finish to bring the score back to 2-1.

Unfortunately a break away goal soon after gave the momentum back to the visitors and as the game moved into its last quarter the Ravens were guilty of loss of concentration and a bit of tiredness to give some soft goals away.

A lot of positives can be taken from the game with Harry and Toby being strong, Sam at the back and Tom also playing well alongside Player of the Week Alfie. Lets see what next week brings.....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT HORWOOD 0 MK ATHLETIC 8

13th September 2009

The second outing of the year for the under 13's saw them play familiar foes from last year who have also picked up some new players. Their number 6 had a very good game and was instrumental in many of the good things they did. We never really got to grips with him which led to Athletic punishing any mistakes and being allowed to play some very good football.

A ball poked through the middle saw the opening goal force its way past Toby in goal. Joe B being tried out in the centre of midfield played a loveley ball wide which opened up the visitors but we failed to capitalise. Jack was being very busy up front pressuring the defenders but the half dozen strong players on the opposition slowly built up the pressure on the Ravens.

Poorly defended corners were responsible for a couple of the goals - the first by number 6 - unmarked on the edge of the box - with a later goal being just a simple toe poke through a group of players. In between, the pitch contributed to the game as a very nasty bobble saw the ball jump over Tobys foot and into the net.

Jack had a good free kick followed by a fine shot by Alex K. Our back line improved throughout the game as new players became more used to the offside but a fine ball over the top saw an attacker run on and score to make it 5.

A goalbound deflection appeared to be saved on the line but was given to make it 6 to the visitors before some more personnel changes improved the balance of the team and the Ravens grew in strength towards the end of the game.

A couple of missed challenges saw the visitors score again, this time against the run of play and the final goal was probably the goal of the game wth a good move and great strike.

Difficult for the lads and the parents as we can all see they are not far short of being a very good team - they just need a little luck and a good result to burst into life and get us back on track. Having said that, there were many positives from today with Henry Bu settling into the wide right position with a fine Man of the Match display, Tom and Robin appear to be settled in the central defence and defensive midfielder roles and Jack continues to impress up front being a nuisance to all defenders.

All other players are either progressing very well or confirming their preferred positions so it bodes very well for the future.

We just need that result......

BRACKLEY ATHLETIC JAFFAS 8 GREAT HORWOOD 0

6th September 2009

The opening game of the league season saw the Ravens travel to Brackley.

The hangover from last season is still obvious to see as the lads just lack that little bit of confidence to play the game the way they can.

A new formation was tried of 4-3-3 which took a little while to settle but it looks like it be worthwhile persevering with.

The opening session looked even with both teams having some good moves and both sides looking to exploit areas of the pitch.

However, the home team opened the scoring with a good through ball behind our defence to run on and score for 1-0. Some good moves down our right saw Horwood push forward with Will and Cookie combining. Brackley soon doubled their score after Sam had fought hard to stop an attack but had no support from the rest of the team when the striker recovered to slot the ball home and make it 2-0.

Horwood were not keeping the ball for long enough periods and were giving the ball away too easily. A last minute change to the team due to injury did not help with settling the team but they didnt deserve the third goal which looped in from the touch line after a throw in to Brackley.

3-0 at the break and the instruction was to keep the ball and remain positive. The home team just looked a little more competitive and this small difference was having a big impact on the scoreline.

Henry Bu was introduced after the break and showed some good agression, tackling high up the pitch to win the ball and create pressure on the opposition.

A poorly defended goal kick saw the ball straight back to our net for 4-0 - then a free kick for a back pass saw another added.

Two late goals flattered the home team but did not help to build the confidence we need to get the lads going again towards winning ways.

Positives from the game include man of the match Ed achieving his goals with much improved communication. Henry Bu strong performance and some good moves throughout the remainder of the team.

With this seasons new additions we are still experimenting on the best position for all players but Joe B looks a very good candidate for that elusive central midfield position.

GREAT HORWOOD 3 PRESTON GAWCOTT 4

29th August 2009

The Annual Fun Day saw a game played in good spirit between two even teams. The Ravens had a guest player in Josh competing in his first ever game and with almost his first touch he put the Ravens ahead after some neat play by another new lad Joe B.

1-0 up and the Ravens looked to be passing the ball around on the new pitch and playing some excellent football.

Jack and Alex had strong games throughout,  with Dan teaming up well in the middle with another new player Tom.

Both goalkeepers saw plenty of action with Jack hitting the bar from distance before the visitors grabbed some goals to go 3-1 up.

Joe P gave Horwood a chance to get back into the game to make it 3-2 and at this point the Ravens were really applying the pressure. Unfortunately a mix up in communication and the run of the ball on the new pitch allowed Gawcott to restore their 2 - goal cushion almost immediately.

A second half break gave an opportunity to give the lads encouragement to keep going as only having 11 was starting to tell against the oppositions greater numbers. The last session of the game saw Toby press forward to lose the ball and then battle to win it back. The ball broke to Dan who played a lovely through ball to Alex to finish expertly.

With the clock ticking away Tom had a great chance to level it but it just wasnt to be our day.

Lots of positives can be taken from the day - the lads just need a little luck to get that win under the belt and get them buzzing for the season.
