Great Horwood Ravens 0 – 5 Newton Longville
Another frustrating display from the Ravens saw them lose to their near neighbours. With a side that should not have been overrun in the way that it was, the Ravens were a goal down after only a couple of minutes and apart from a 10 minute spell in the 2nd half never recovered.
On a pitch that was still heavy despite having a fairly dry week, it was Newton Longville that adapted to the conditions better, played the more fluent passing football and were nearly always a yard or so quicker off the mark. George had a good 1st half in goal and could not do anything about the 3 conceded. Daisy was playing with some assurance at the back and using her head in more ways than one alongside a subdued Joseph. Will tried to get involved in midfield but could not get the ball and Archie D and Jack were again unable to have decent ball on the wings in order to let Oliver have a goal scoring opportunity. When we did get the ball we were guilty of giving possession away to easily.
Changes were made throughout the half with Jemima, Archie M and Louis replacing Jack, Oliver and Will but the pattern of the game continued in the same fashion.
H/T 0 – 3
For a brief 10 minute spell after half time with Oliver back on upfront, George slotting into defence and Will taking over in goal, we started to put pressure onto the NL goal but could not get past their keeper who was playing well. Then against the run of play, NL scored again after Will had made some good diving saves at feet. The game was then dominated by NL with a 5th goal being conceded before the final whistle blew.
F/T 0 - 5
Player of the week – Daisy for her good defensive performance and heading ability.
Squad: George, Daisy, Will, Joseph, Archie D, Jack, Jemima, Archie M, Louis and Oliver.

Great Horwood Ravens 2 – 2 Woodside Rovers (1 – 3 Penalties)
After the disappointing performance of last week, the Ravens showed much more purpose in this Shield 2nd round tie.
On a mud bath of a pitch that would not have looked out of place as an elephants play area and continual rain throughout, both teams served up a tremendous end to end game of football in which neither side deserved to lose.
Both teams had chances in the first 15 minutes or so, with George being the dirtier (mud) of the 2 keepers until a corner from Archie D was met in the box by Joseph who neatly put the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
In order to keep the midfield fresh due to the conditions, changes were made at regular intervals and it was after one set that Woodside equalized when a speculative cross from the right eluded everybody and spun on the muddy surface away from George and crept in a the far post 1-1. More chances were created at both ends with Archie D making more of an impact in midfield by bringing the wide players into the game on the parts of the pitch where there was grass. Then just before half time, Woodside were allowed to pick up the ball just inside our half and as they approached our box nobody closed the ball carrier down and he was able to get a shot that the unfortunate Harley re-directed away from George and into his own net.
H/T 1 - 2
Straight from the kick off the Ravens were awarded a penalty for handball but unfortunately could not take advantage as Archie’s spot kick was hit straight at the keeper and rebounded to safety. Chances came and went at both ends before the Ravens were awarded a second penalty again for handball which Oliver took and although it was hit straight at the keeper, he followed up to smash the ball into the net 2-2.
Oliver nearly made it 3-2 when clean through but steered the ball just wide of the post and further goalmouth scrambles ensued as the pitch became worse, before the final whistle blew and a penalty shootout took place.
F/T 2 - 2
Unfortunately the Raven’s were unable to seize the initiative as Woodside scored their first penalty and Joseph hitting straight at the keeper. Woodside then scored again with Archie making amends by getting one back. George then saved their 3rd before an unfortunate slip and scuffed penalty from Oliver. Woodside scored their 3rd before Will missed his to allow Woodside through to the next round by a score of 3-1.
Scorers: Joseph, Oliver
Player of the week: Archie Denne
Squad: George, Will, Joseph, Archie D, Harley, Mark, Oliver, Daisy, Jack and Louis.

Great Horwood Ravens 0 – 4 Great Linford Jets
Another disappointing display!!
In our first league game of 2011, the Ravens took on Gt Linford Jets hoping for a similar performance and result to the 2-2 draw on the first day of the season.
On a reasonably dry pitch it looked hopeful, but the pattern of play was soon set as Linford outplayed, out thought, out muscled the Raven's and were always first to the ball, so it did not take long before they were in front. Despite some terrific goal keeping from George throughout the whole game, he could not keep the tidal wave at bay and we were soon 2 then 3 nil down by half time. Daisy was also having a good game at the back and Will was tireless in his endeavours in whatever position he was in, but needed to slow it down to avoid burnout. From midfield we did manage to get tackles in, then kept giving the ball away with sloppy passing and so did not test their goal keeper once.
H/T 0 - 3
Changes were made with Oliver, Archie M and Louis making his league debut replacing Harley, Jemima and Jack which created a few opportunities as Linford kept pressing forward leaving gaps at the back, but we were not able to capitalize on.
Carrying on from where they left off in the first half, Linford continued to dominate and it was much to George's credit that they only scored 1 more in the secong half although there was a bit more passion and desire from the Raven's during this period. More changes both in personel and positional were made until the final whistle blew.
F/T 0 - 4
Player of the Week - George, enough said.
Team: George, Will, Daisy, Archie D, Harley, Jemima, Jack, Oliver, Archie M and Louis.

Great Horwood Ravens 3 – 1 Deanshanger Colts
After a long enforced lay off due to the bad weather and Christmas, the U10’s finally got round to playing football again in the 1st round of the Shield and came away with a hard fought victory over their opponents from division 4.
On a pitch that was heavy to start with and got worse as the game went on, both sides played a great game of football. With a starting line up of George, Will, Joseph, Mark, Jack, Harley and Oliver we never got going and the rustiness was there to see and after 15 minutes we found ourselves a goal down. 0-1 A change was made with Daisy replacing Mark and Joseph pushed up into central midfield which started to see us putting together some neat passing which eventually led to the equalizer from Joseph.1-1. Jemima then replaced Oliver with Harley moving up front which led to the second goal from Joseph.
H/T 2-1
More changes were made at the break with Harley and Jack taking a breather and Oliver and Mark coming back on. Daisy and Will were continuing to play brilliantly at the back so that partnership was left intact. Both teams created chances but found their goalkeepers in fine form. A final set of changes saw Harley and Jack replacing Mark and Jemima and as the game entered the last 10 minutes a goal for Deanshanger would have set up a nervy finish and possible penalties or one for Ravens to kill the tie off. Thankfully it was the latter as Joseph secured his hat-trick. 3-1
Scorers – Joseph (3)
Player of the Week – Joseph for his 3 goals and all around performance although he was closely run by Will who showed maturity above his age at the heart of the defence.
Squad – George, Will, Joseph, Mark, Jack, Harley, Oliver, Daisy and Jemima.

Great Horwood Ravens 8 – 3 Toddington Rovers Leopards
1st WIN OF THE SEASON.
Following on from the 2nd half performance in the last game at Scot Youth, the Ravens outplayed their mid table rivals to record their 1st win of the season.
In past games we have surrendered early goals but on this occasion we immediately put the visitors on the defensive. Excellent passing between the midfield 3 of Harley, Archie D and Jack and some good holding up of the ball by Oliver upfront soon put the Ravens in front. A goal that England could learn from saw Jack collect the ball on the right after some good work by Archie, cut inside a hit a shot that the keeper had no chance with 1-0. Further efforts followed and it was against the run of play that Toddington equalized when their best player was allowed to run through the middle and score.
Far from letting this upset them, Ravens were soon back in front with a second goal from Jack and soon after a third from Joseph. Toddington pulled another goal back before we nearly made it 4-2 when a long clearance from George beat the defence and Oliver latched onto it and sent in a shot that crashed against the bar and bounced to safety. At the back Will and Harry were playing well before Daisy replaced Harry just before half time. Archie M replaced Harley for a spell down the left and made a good contribution to the game.
H/T 3-2
After words of encouragement that we should have been at least 5 or 6 goals up, we set about Toddington in the 2nd half and straight from the kick off Oliver scored his 1st of the game, bundling in a low cross. This was soon followed by a second, a low shot that went through the keeper at the near post. We then survived from letting in a 3rd when Daisy handled in the box to give away the penalty which fortunately ended up on pitch 2!! Harley who was replacing Archie M got the 6th after another good passing movement before Oliver rounded off his hat-trick in fine style with another hard low shot that the keeper could not keep out.
Toddington scored straight from the kick off before another flowing move saw Oliver grab his 4th of the game to make it 8-3.
F/T 8-3
Scorers: Jack (2), Joseph, Harley, Oliver (4)
Player of the week: Oliver - 4 goals, led the line well, great link up play with the midfield and put continuous pressure on the Toddington defence.
Squad: George, Will, Harry, Archie D, Jack, Harley, Oliver, Joseph, Archie M, Daisy.
06/11/2010
Scot Youth 3 - 3 Great Horwood Ravens
A GAME OF 2 HALVES!!!
A lunchtime kick off did not seem to suit the Ravens as with probably the strongest line up this season they simply never got going in the 1st half allowing the opposition far too much time on the ball and not making an effort to tackle or win it back. Only some good saves from George kept the score line even until mid way through the half when we failed to clear balls from our box allowing them to score 2 goals.
H/T 2 - 0
The second half started in the same vain and we were soon 3 - 0 down before the fight-back started. Harley won a penalty after being pushed over in the box and Archie hit the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. We then started to win the tackles and get the ball moving forwards which led to a second from Harley.
The game then swung from end to end with George keeping them out with a number of fine saves before Joseph popped up with the equalizer about 7 minutes from the end. We then had a few more chances to win the game as a 3 on 1 move with Joseph down the right failed to get the ball into the middle and then with the last kick of the game we did get the ball over the line but the referee ruled that it had not.
Overall a fair result from 2 good foot-balling teams but had we shown the same commitment in the 1st half, things could have been even better.
F/T 3 - 3
Scorers: Archie D, Harley, Joseph.
Squad: George, Will, Joseph, Archie D, Jack, Mark, Harley, Oliver, Jemima and Harry.
The whole squad received the player of the week award for the 2nd half come-back although a special mention must go to Harry for the 20 minute contribution he made in defence whilst others took a breather.
23/10/2010
Great Horwood Ravens 2 – 6 Olney Town Hawks
A much better showing than 1 month ago against a very good Olney side saw the Ravens lose again but by a smaller margin, which in itself did not do them any justice.
Trying a new formation of Will at sweeper behind Daisy and Archie M, we soon found ourselves 2 -0 down whilst they were adapting. Joseph was doing his best in midfield to quell the attacks with help from Harley but it soon became 3-0.
With some positional changes seeing Daisy drop back to play alongside Will and Jack replacing Archie, we started to get into the game a bit more which resulted in the Ravens pulling a goal back after a great run by Joseph saw him pass to Harley, he crossed into the box for Oliver to sweep left footed into the net. A goal which came about from training during the week!!
Unfortunately Olney then scored again.
H/T 1 – 4
The second half saw Mark on for Harley, but only for a few minutes before a leg injury forced him off. During this period, Olney scored again before changes were made with Archie back on and Harley replacing Oliver upfront. The Ravens then got a second after a great through ball from Joseph saw Harley brush off the defender and run on to put the ball past the keeper. Both keepers then made good saves before Olney rounded off the scoring.
F/T 2 – 6
Scorers: Oliver, Harley
Player of the Week: Joseph for his all action display.
Squad: George, Will, Daisy, Archie M, Joseph, Harley, Oliver, Jack and Mark.
16/10/2010
Newton Longville 2 – 1 Great Horwood Ravens
An evenly contested game between 2 attacking sides saw the Ravens edged out by a single goal.
The Ravens lined up with Joseph in goal, Will and Archie D in defence, George, Archie M and Jack in midfield with Harley making his debut up front and immediately went on the offensive. Midway through the 1st half Raven’s took the lead following a flowing move down the right and tucked away for his first goal for the club by Harley.
The game continued from end to end with the impressive Will dominating at the back and Joseph collecting everything coming to him in goal. Against the run of play, Longville equalized when the ball was not cleared properly following a corner. Changes were made with George coming off, Harley dropping back to midfield and Oliver upfront and whilst we were still getting into position Longville took an underserved lead. Mark then hit the post with a first time shot on the turn as the half came to an end.
H/T 2-1
Both teams had chances to win the game in the second half, but with George reverting to keeper and Joseph in his role as defensive midfielder we kept them out, Harry going to defence and Mark on the right we struggled to breakdown their defence and even with more changes we still did not get the breakthrough we deserved.
F/T 2-1
Scorer - Harley
Squad – George, Joseph, Will, Archie M, Archie D, Harley, Jack, Harry, Mark and Oliver.
Player of the Week – Will who was tireless in the tackle, covered lots of ground and generally was a rock at the back.

Great Horwood Ravens 1 – 1 MK Wanderers Kestrels
A much better performance by the team after last week’s game against Olney Town.
After the torrential rain on Friday, the pitch was in remarkable condition as both teams lined up for our 2nd league match of the season. From the kick off we could see that this was going to be an evenly contested game and after less than 5 minutes the Raven’s were in front courtesy of a goal from Joseph. Both teams then had chances but found the opposing keepers in fine form. Will and Harry at the back were doing their defensive jobs well, ably assisted by Joseph playing in a defensive midfield role but breaking forward whenever possible and Mark and Jack supporting Oliver up front.
At a point somewhat against the run of play Wanderers equalized as Will attempting to clear the ball off the line only managed to knock it in. Although this may have affected him, he came out and played the rest of the game as though nothing had happened.
Soon after George picked up a knock whilst bravely diving to smother the ball and was replaced in goal by Joseph with Daisy taking over the defensive midfield role. Wanderers started to dictate play and one flying save to his left by Joseph kept the score level as we went to the break.
H/T 1 -1
The second half saw George returning in goal, Daisy dropping back to replace the hardworking Harry and Jemima on for Oliver with Jack pushing up front. This almost lead to a second as from a long kick by George, Jack let it bounce in front of him and then hit it first time only to see it just clear the bar with the keeper stranded.
Chances were then created at either end as were changes with Oliver coming back on to replace Jemima. Then a quick break by Wanderers saw a ball played into the area which was heading for Daisy’s face and instinct took over as her hands went up to protect it giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty. George stood tall as the Wanderers striker came up to take it and coolly collected it at his feet as no real contact was made on the ball. A let off but fully deserved.
Then came the next bit of controversy as the Raven’s made an attack on the Wanderers goal and for all the spectators it was clear that the ball had crossed the line, but the referee did not see it and play carried on (certainly a reason for video replay!!!).
The game played out the last few minutes and on balance a draw was a fair result for both teams so well done to all.
F/T 1 – 1
Scorer: Joseph
Player of the week – Jack for his tireless running both on and off the ball.
Squad: George, Harry, Will, Joseph, Jack, Mark, Oliver, Daisy and Jemima.

Great Linford Jets 2 – 2 Great Horwood Ravens
A new look U10’s took to the field at Great Linford for their first game of competitive football, a milestone in itself for the bulk of the squad who have been here from the start at U7 level.
Looking at the size and stature of some of the opposition it seemed we could have been in for a hard game but within 5 minutes the Raven’s were 1 – 0 up. A free kick was awarded midway in the Linford half which was floated into the box by Archie D and with a neat touch on the turn put into the net by Joseph. We then proceeded to outplay the Jets with Daisy and Will at the back winning their battle against the Linford strikers, Joseph just in front of them and Mark winning tackles on the right and setting up forward play. It was no surprise when the Ravens went 2 – 0 up. Mark won a series of tackles just inside our half and drove forward with the ball. A goal mouth scramble ensued before Oliver placed the ball into the bottom corner with a neat left foot shot.
H/T 0 – 2
After reminding the Ravens that the score was 0 – 0 and we were to play the 2nd half as we had the 1st we started brightly with Jack and Jemima replacing Oliver and Mark. However Linford were starting to create more chances and George in goal was becoming more involved in the game. As the half went on we started to lose our shape leaving big holes between the midfield and defenders and the ball more often than not was kicked away from George when he had come to collect it as panic started to creep in.
One of these instances led to Linford getting a goal back as George was caught out coming to get the ball on the edge of his area and having it taken from him by our defence. We then lost possession in the box and the ball was soon in the net 1 – 2.
Although we started to settle down a bit more with Oliver back on for Jack and Mark for Jemima, Linford were getting stronger although very fortunate not to have conceded a 3rd goal. A goal kick from George was handled just inside the Linford half but was still available for Oliver to pick up and have a 1 on 1 with the keeper as he had possession. Unfortunately the referee blew for the free kick instead of letting play continue so the chance was lost.
With the clock ticking down, Linford managed to get a second and but for some great saves by George may have sneaked all 3 points with a win, but the Ravens held on to share the honours.
Player of the week went to Mark, but there were also noticeable performances from Daisy and Will in his 1st game for any club. Credit also for the rest of the squad on a great start and hope that we can build upon this game for the rest of the season. The main things we need to do are listen, focus and keep our shape for the whole game and not just parts of it.
Squad: George, Daisy, Will, Joseph, Archie D, Mark, Oliver, Jack and Jemima.
